Al-Balad

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ﴿١﴾

90:1I swear by this town,¹

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ﴿٢﴾

90:2as you reside in this town;

وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ﴿٣﴾

90:3[and] by the father and him whom he begot:²

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ﴿٤﴾

90:4certainly We created man in travail.³

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ﴿٥﴾

90:5Does he suppose that no one will ever have power over him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا﴿٦﴾

90:6He says, ‘I have squandered immense wealth.’⁴

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ﴿٧﴾

90:7Does he suppose that no one sees him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ﴿٨﴾

90:8Have We not made for him two eyes,

وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ﴿٩﴾

90:9a tongue, and two lips,

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ﴿١٠﴾

90:10and shown him the two paths [of good and evil]?⁵

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ﴿١١﴾

90:11Yet he has not embarked upon the uphill task.⁶

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ﴿١٢﴾

90:12And what will show you what is the uphill task?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ﴿١٣﴾

90:13[It is] the freeing of a slave,⁷

أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ﴿١٤﴾

90:14or feeding, during days of [general] starvation,⁸

يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ﴿١٥﴾

90:15an orphan among relatives⁹

أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ﴿١٦﴾

90:16or a needy man in desolation,¹⁰

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ﴿١٧﴾

90:17while being one of those who have faith and enjoin one another to patience, and enjoin one another to compassion.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ﴿١٨﴾

90:18They are the People of the Right Hand.¹¹

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴿١٩﴾

90:19But those who defy Our signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.¹²

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ﴿٢٠﴾

90:20A closed Fire will be [imposed] upon them.¹³
