Syed Zeeshan Haider Jawadi
1938–2000 · author of Anwar Al-Quran
Syed Zeeshan Haider Jawadi was an Indian Shia scholar, translator, poet and orator. He was born in 1938 in Karari, near Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, and studied first at Jamia Amjadia in his home town and then at Jamia Nazmia in Lucknow. He went on to Najaf, where he read until 1961 under teachers including Abul Qasim al-Khoei and Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr.
He wrote and lectured in Urdu and English across Qur’anic commentary, jurisprudence, history and philosophy, and by the early 1990s served as dean of some forty Shia theological schools in India. Besides Anwar Al-Quran, his translations and commentaries include Nahj al-Balagha and al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, along with Nuqoosh-e-Ismat, a set of life sketches of the fourteen infallibles.
He died in Abu Dhabi in April 2000.

Anwar Al-Quran (أنوار القرآن, “Lights of the Qur’an”) runs through the whole Qur’an. This site presents it as 685 passages covering every verse of all 114 surahs, each with its commentary and, beneath that, footnotes explaining individual words and phrases — 4,713 notes in all.
Where a footnote glosses a particular verse, the verse carries a superscript linking to it and the footnote links back. The printed numbering has been kept exactly as it stands, gaps and all, because those numbers index the source edition rather than this one.
