89. Al-Fajr · The Dawn

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
وَٱلْفَجْرِ
89:1By the Dawn,
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍۢ
وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ
هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌۭ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ
89:5Is there an oath in that for one possessing intellect?10
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
89:6Have you not regarded how your Lord dealt with [the people of] ‘Ad,11
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ
ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ
89:8the like of which was not created among cities,
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ
89:9and [the people of] Thamud, who hollowed out the rocks in the valley,13

Commentary on this passage
Verse 6
3.Many lessons and advices are found in this Surah. Mention of the People of Aad. Aad was name of a person whose son was Shaddad and who got a Paradise constructed in the name of his grandfather and named it as the garden of Iram. But when he went for its inspection, Malakul-Maut (Angel of death) met him on the gate itself and captured his soul and he was deprived from even inspecting the garden, which was seen by his servants and the labourers employed by him many a times.

Benefit
This chapter is also called Surah Husain. Because it begins with ten nights and it concludes with Nafse Mutamainna. Whose greatest symbol is Imam Husain (a.s.).

Laiyaale Ashr - The first ten nights of Zilhijj or Mohurrum or the last ten nights of Ramadhan.

Shafa-o-watr - It denotes both types of numbers, or both prayers of the Nafila of Shab.

Vasr - It is derived from Saraa - That journey is made at the night, and night itself does nor move.

Hijr - Intellect. It is derived from Hajr because intellect prevents us from sins.

Aad - Aad bin Aws bin Iram bin Saam bin Nuh. This tribe is called Aad on the basis of the father and Iram on the basis of the grandfather.

I'maad - Pillars. This tribe lived in tents that were based on pillars.

Jabua - It is derived from Jaub - To cut off.
