Verses 1–7

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَٰشِيَةِ﴿١﴾

88:1Did you receive the account of the Enveloper?⁵

وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَٰشِعَةٌ﴿٢﴾

88:2Some faces on that day will be humbled,

عَامِلَةٌۭ نَّاصِبَةٌۭ﴿٣﴾

88:3wrought-up and weary:⁶

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةًۭ﴿٤﴾

88:4they will enter a scorching fire⁷

تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍۢ﴿٥﴾

88:5and made to drink from a boiling spring.

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍۢ﴿٦﴾

88:6They will have no food except cactus,⁸

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍۢ﴿٧﴾

88:7neither nourishing, nor of avail against hunger.
