Verses 1–13

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ﴿١﴾

85:1By the heaven with its Houses,³

وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ﴿٢﴾

85:2by the Promised Day,⁴

وَشَاهِدٍۢ وَمَشْهُودٍۢ﴿٣﴾

85:3by the Witness and the Witnessed:

قُتِلَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ﴿٤﴾

85:4perish the People of the Ditch!⁵

ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ﴿٥﴾

85:5The fire abounding in fuel,

إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌۭ﴿٦﴾

85:6above which they sat⁶

وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌۭ﴿٧﴾

85:7as they were themselves witnesses to what they did to the faithful.

وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ﴿٨﴾

85:8They were vindictive towards them only because they had faith in Allah, the All-mighty and the All-laudable,

ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ شَهِيدٌ﴿٩﴾

85:9to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is witness to all things.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ﴿١٠﴾

85:10Indeed those who persecute the faithful, men and women, and do not repent thereafter, there is the punishment of hell for them and the punishment of burning.⁷

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٌۭ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ﴿١١﴾

85:11Indeed those who have faith and do righteous deeds—for them will be gardens with streams running in them. That is the supreme success.

إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ﴿١٢﴾

85:12Indeed your Lord’s striking is severe.⁸

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ﴿١٣﴾

85:13It is indeed He who originates and brings back,⁹
