Verses 1–20

2.This holy Verse was revealed at a time when the chiefs of Quraish were sitting with Prophet (s.a.) and he was inviting them to Islam. Ibne Umme Mukhtum, a cousin of Khadija who had become blind started asking questions regarding Islamic teachings to Prophet (s.a.) and the Prophet (s.a.) continued the conversation. But certain people could not tolerate him (Ibne Muktum). Allah clarified regarding both of them that, that person had no right to be displeased, because the one who came was also a servant of Allah. And the Prophet (s.a.) also should become anxious to that extent as regards the infidels that they should be given so much importance. Either they believe or go to Hell the Prophet’s job was to deliver the message of Allah and that is all. Commentators have found fault with Prophet (s.a.) for continuing the conversation, whereas this is extremly strange and a curious thing that in propagation of Islam to prefer one follower over the other and promote the not so important over the important is not a mistake of any kind. Now it is for Allah that He forgives this responsibility that on certain occasion not much trouble should be taken and on such and such occassion more efforts should be put in. This is not in the control of the servants. In any case he has to act on his religious duties. Actually the person who turned his face in frown is someone other than the Prophet (s.a.) as in some traditions. Uthman’s name has been given and in some it is said it was a person from Bani Umayyah. There is no connection of this with the Prophet (s.a.) and it may be to cover the defect of Bani Umayyah that they have turned this this ayat towards Prophet (s.a.).
