Verses 9–38

أَبْصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةٌۭ﴿٩﴾

79:9bearing a humbled look.¹

يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ﴿١٠﴾

79:10They will say, ‘Are we being returned to our earlier state?²

أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمًۭا نَّخِرَةًۭ﴿١١﴾

79:11What, even after we have been decayed bones?!’³

قَالُوا۟ تِلْكَ إِذًۭا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌۭ﴿١٢﴾

79:12They will say, ‘This is, then, a ruinous return!’⁴

فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌۭ وَٰحِدَةٌۭ﴿١٣﴾

79:13Yet it will be only a single shout,⁵

فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ﴿١٤﴾

79:14and behold, they will be awake.⁶

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ﴿١٥﴾

79:15Did you receive the story of Moses,

إِذْ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى﴿١٦﴾

79:16when his Lord called out to him in the holy valley of Tuwa?⁷

ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ﴿١٧﴾

79:17[And said,] ‘Go to Pharaoh, for indeed he has rebelled,

فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ﴿١٨﴾

79:18and say, ‘‘Would you purify yourself?

وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ﴿١٩﴾

79:19I will guide you to your Lord, that you may fear [Him]?’’ ’

فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلْءَايَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ﴿٢٠﴾

79:20Then he showed him the greatest sign.⁸

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ﴿٢١﴾

79:21But he denied, and disobeyed.

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ﴿٢٢﴾

79:22Then he turned back, walking swiftly,

فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ﴿٢٣﴾

79:23and gathered [the people] and proclaimed,⁹

فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ﴿٢٤﴾

79:24saying, ‘I am your exalted lord!’

فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ﴿٢٥﴾

79:25So Allah seized him with the punishment of this life and the Hereafter.¹⁰

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةًۭ لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ﴿٢٦﴾

79:26There is indeed a moral in that for someone who fears!

ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚ بَنَىٰهَا﴿٢٧﴾

79:27Is your creation more prodigious or that of the heaven He has built?

رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا﴿٢٨﴾

79:28He raised its vault and fashioned it,¹¹

وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا﴿٢٩﴾

79:29and darkened its night, and brought forth its forenoon.¹²¹³

وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ﴿٣٠﴾

79:30Thereafter He spread out the earth,

أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا﴿٣١﴾

79:31brought forth from it its water and pastures,¹⁴

وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا﴿٣٢﴾

79:32setting firm the mountains,

مَتَٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ﴿٣٣﴾

79:33as a [place of] sustenance for you and your livestock.

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ﴿٣٤﴾

79:34When the Greatest Catastrophe befalls¹⁵

يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ﴿٣٥﴾

79:35—the day when man will remember his endeavours

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ﴿٣٦﴾

79:36and hell is brought into view for those who can see—

فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ﴿٣٧﴾

79:37as for him who has been rebellious

وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا﴿٣٨﴾

79:38and preferred the life of this world,
