Verses 1–14

1.Allah has mentioned about His different favours to bring man on the right path and to make him pass through examinations (tests) so that he becomes grateful. (i) In the beginning man was nothing and there was no mention about him anywhere. (ii) We have created him from a mixed matter in which two different matters instead of dashing with each other and being destroyed, become a basic substance for creating a new thing. (iii) We have gifted humans with hearing and sight and made them excellent compared to inorganic matter and vegetables. (iv) We only have guided him and made him high in status compared to animals. (v) But it is regretful that he could not become a grateful servant and in their midst people of ingratitude came into existence. Also this way he made himself worse than inorganic matter, vegetables and animals. All these do not go against the commands of Allah, but man is always ready for revolt and rebellion.

2.Zamakhshari and Fakhruddin Razi both have related that this Verse was revealed in honour of Ahle Bayt (a.s.) when Hasan and Husain (a.s.) fell sick, and Prophet (s.a.) told Ali (a.s.) to do Nazr (vow). And he with Fatima (a.s.) and Fizza vowed for three days of fasting each. And when after recovery they fasted, three saa-a (measures) of barley was brought and Fatima (a.s.) made five loaves of bread from each for three days and at the time of Iftar (breaking fast) one day a poor man, next day an orphan, third day a prisoner came and everyone gave away their bread to them and did their Iftar with water. On the third day the Prophet (s.a.) saw this condition of theirs and he was very much disturbed. Jibreel came with the Surah that this is the reward for the Ahle Bayt (a.s.) for their selflessness. It should be clear that here first of all Allah has interpreted the characters of Ahle Bayt (a.s.) that we don’t want reward and thanks which is the sign of greatness of their characters. And for us it is the best lesson to do good deeds, otherwise Ahle Bayt (a.s.) did not say this with their own tongue. On the other hand their fear of Qiyamat is mentioned continuously so that we do not become heedless about the fear of Qiyamat. When people of such merits have fear of Qiyamat, then what is our standing? The third issue is that when loaves of bread made by Sayyida were given to the beggar, then after doing Nazr on their name how can believers and specially Sadaat be deprived of it? And what type of respect is this, which itself is against the practice of Ahle Bayt (a.s.). In reality the beggars may have been in any form but apparently they were poor and orphan and prisoner of Medina and laws of Islam are determined by apparent things even though the reality may be different and it cannot be made as foundation for the laws of Islam.
