Verses 15–40

وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ﴿١٥﴾

75:15though he should offer excuses [to justify his failings].¹

لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِۦٓ﴿١٦﴾

75:16Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it.

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُۥ وَقُرْءَانَهُۥ﴿١٧﴾

75:17Indeed it is up to Us to put it together and to recite it.

فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُۥ﴿١٨﴾

75:18And when We have recited it, follow its recitation.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُۥ﴿١٩﴾

75:19Then, its exposition [also] lies with Us.

كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ﴿٢٠﴾

75:20No! Indeed, you love this transitory life²

وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ﴿٢١﴾

75:21and forsake the Hereafter.

وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ نَّاضِرَةٌ﴿٢٢﴾

75:22Some faces will be fresh on that day,³

إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌۭ﴿٢٣﴾

75:23looking to their Lord,⁴

وَوُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بَاسِرَةٌۭ﴿٢٤﴾

75:24and some faces will be scowling on that day,

تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌۭ﴿٢٥﴾

75:25knowing that they will be dealt out a punishment breaking the spine.⁵

كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِىَ﴿٢٦﴾

75:26No indeed! When it reaches up to the collar bones⁶

وَقِيلَ مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍۢ﴿٢٧﴾

75:27and it is said, ‘Who will take him up?’⁷

وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلْفِرَاقُ﴿٢٨﴾

75:28and he knows that it is the [time of] parting,

وَٱلْتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ﴿٢٩﴾

75:29and each shank clasps the other shank,⁸

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمَسَاقُ﴿٣٠﴾

75:30that day he shall be driven toward your Lord.

فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ﴿٣١﴾

75:31He neither confirmed [the messages of Allah], nor did he pray,

وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ﴿٣٢﴾

75:32but denied [them] and turned away,

ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ﴿٣٣﴾

75:33and went back swaggering to his family.⁹

أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰ﴿٣٤﴾

75:34So, woe to you! Woe to you!¹⁰

ثُمَّ أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰٓ﴿٣٥﴾

75:35Again, woe to you! Woe to you!

أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتْرَكَ سُدًى﴿٣٦﴾

75:36Does man suppose that he has been abandoned to futility?¹¹

أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةًۭ مِّن مَّنِىٍّۢ يُمْنَىٰ﴿٣٧﴾

75:37Was he not a drop of emitted semen,

ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةًۭ فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ﴿٣٨﴾

75:38and then a clinging mass? Whereat He created and proportioned [him],

فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ﴿٣٩﴾

75:39and made of him the two sexes, male and female.

أَلَيْسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُحْۦِىَ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ﴿٤٠﴾

75:40Is not [someone like] that able to revive the dead?
