Makkan40 verses

75:1I swear by the Day of Resurrection!4

75:2And I swear by the self-critical soul!

75:3Does man suppose that We will not put together his bones [at resurrection]?

75:4Yes indeed, We are able to [re]shape [even] his fingertips!5

75:5Indeed, man desires to go on living viciously.

75:6He asks, ‘When will be this “day of resurrection”?!’

75:7But when the eyes are dazzled,6

75:8the moon is eclipsed,

75:9and the sun and the moon are brought together,

75:10that day man will say, ‘Where is the escape [from this day]?’

75:11No indeed! There will be no refuge!7

75:12That day the [final] goal will be toward your Lord.

75:13That day man will be informed about what [works] he had sent ahead [to the scene of judgement] and [the legacy that he had] left behind.

75:14Indeed, man is a witness to himself,

Commentary on this passage

Verse 2

1.Self (nafs) are of different types and grades. (i) One stage is where nafs prompts to commit evil. (ii) Second stage is where it reproaches on evil things. (iii) And one stage is where nafs remains satisfied on everything ordained by Allah. It is evident that Naf-e-Ammarah (wayward self) is not competent, that its oath can be taken. And Nafse-Lawwamah (one’s accusing self) is surely competent that it can be used for oath in confronting the evil people.

Verse 4

2.Those who deny Qiyamat, their one objection was that when so many dead bodies will get mixed into soil how all will be separated from each other. Allah gave reference of fingerprints and proved that, one who keeps each minute thing in the view and can make such fingerprints that they cannot be similar to one another and cannot meet each other. Then what is the difficulty for Him in separating soil and bones of the dead bodies. It is obvious that thumb impression are taken on the documents proving that all the thumbs have different type of prints.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 4

Laa-uqsem - ‘La’ on both the places is extra and the place of use is that oath is taken and the views of the enemies are refuted.

  2. 5

Banaan - The plural of Banaana, that is fingerprints. Some people, say that it indicates to the point that all the fingerprints of the people are not similar. When Allah is so powerful that He can create unique fingerprints why it should be difficult for Him to enliven the dead. And why He cannot segregate the dust of every person.

  3. 6

Barq - To be terrified and astounded.

  4. 7

    Wazar - Refuge or asylum.
