Makkan28 verses

71:3Worship Allah and be wary of Him, and obey me,

71:4that He may forgive you some of your sins and respite you until a specified time. Indeed when Allah’s [appointed] time comes, it cannot be deferred, if you know.’1

71:5He said, ‘My Lord! Indeed, I have summoned my people night and day

71:6but my summons only increases their evasion.2

71:7Indeed whenever I have summoned them, so that You might forgive them, they would put their fingers into their ears and draw their cloaks over their heads, and they were persistent [in their unfaith], and disdainful in [their] arrogance.34

71:8Again I summoned them aloud,

71:9and again appealed to them publicly and confided with them privately,

71:10telling [them]: ‘‘Plead to your Lord for forgiveness. Indeed, He is all-forgiving.

71:11He will send for you abundant rains from the sky,5

71:12and aid you with wealth and sons, and provide you with gardens and provide you with streams.

71:13What is the matter with you that you do not look upon Allah with veneration,

71:14though He has created you in [various] stages?6

71:15Have you not seen how Allah has created the seven heavens in layers,7

71:16and has made therein the moon for a light and the sun for a lamp?

71:17Allah made you grow from the earth, with a [vegetable] growth.

71:18Then He makes you return to it, and He will bring you forth [without fail].

Commentary on this passage

Verse 11

1.With these Ayat it becomes evidently clear that the effect of asking forgiveness from Allah does not appear only in the form of Paradise and salvation in the hereafter. But in this world also it bears effects and has good blessings which cannot be counted. Rains falls due through repentance. Increase can be obtained in wealth and children through repentance. Gardens become lush green and verdant through repentance. Canals flow through repentance, and as a matter of fact repentance is that which cools Allah’s wrath. Now after this only the question remains of the hidden wisdom of Allah, if in His expediency, misery is included the effect of repentance will be seen in the hereafter otherwise it can become manifest in this world also. As in the case of certain worst sinners, His expediency, to the fulfillment of the condition also collects all these favours. So that in the next world no part of theirs remains (to be awarded). Whatever is to be given, may be given in this world only or they are given opportunity to complete their mischief and to show their wickedness in its entirety.

Verse 16

2.In this beautiful similie it is evident that Nur (Light) is the name of brightness and lamp is its source. This is most evident pointer towards the status of sun and the moon, that in the moon, light is definitely there, but it is of the sun. By itself moon does not have any light or brightness. That is present in the sun alone.
