Commentary on this passage

Verse 16

1.On the day of Qiyamat no one will be of any help to anyone. And the time will be tough to such an extent that yesterday on whom we were ready to sacrifice, today they are offered as ransom to save own self. But there is no chance whatsoever to escape and hell is calling each one. And the heat is such that a layer of skin gets burnt and immediately another layer comes up and this continues without end. This is the punishment for not listening to the message of Allah. And those who had accumulated wealth and did not spend it. In the religion of Allah the question of revenue has no less importance, compared to the beliefs and principles of faith.

Verse 22

2.Salvation from hell is neither imaginable nor an optimism. Escape from hell is very limited, and for that the following conditions and qualities should necessarily be produced : (i) To be steadfast in Prayer. (ii) Wealth should be distributed among the poor. (iii) Day of Qiyamat should be kept in mind. (iv) Fear of Allah should find place in the heart. (v) Modesty should be preserved. (vi) Trustworthiness and pledges should be observed. (vii) One should remain firm on testimonies and should fulfill them. (viii) Prayer should be protected and it should not be allowed to be wasted.

In protection of modesty, the distinction of wife and slave girl is that Islam wants chastity. It does not want monasticism. That does not mean that the right of the wife be destroyed and in this way other sins are perpetrated. Or in clear words it can be said that in Islam sex is not ranked with crimes. It has fully respected the inner feelings of humans and has provided a complete code for its appeasement. This act has been made commendable. The only demand is that whatever you do it should be within the limits of law and not beyond the limits of law. Otherwise man becomes one of the offenders and is deprieved of salvation in the hereafter.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

    Mohel - Molten copper.

  2. Benefit

Though Surah Ma’rij is Meccan there is possibility that it has Medinan Verses. Also the place of revelation Abtah or Batha is not confined to Mecca. The ayat which mentions that there shall be no chastisement for the people due to the Prophet (s.a.) does not contradict the incidence of individual punishment. Also this phenomenon did not become so well known like that of the people of Elephants because it was a solitary incident.

  3. 2

Yubsaroonahum - The sinners will be shown their friends and companions but they would not even be prepared to speak to each other.

  4. 3

Faseela - Asheera - Clan and family.

  5. 4

Kalla - certainly not. There is no question of requital on the day of Qiyamat.

  6. 5

Ladha - A section of Hell.

  7. 6

Shawa - Skin of the body which is not at the spot of slaughter.

  8. 7

Awaa’ - Derived from Waa’. That is to be the thing closed in a chest.

  9. 8

    Halooa - Extremely cowardly, greedy.

Benefit: The 19th ayat is not against Ahsan-e-Taqweem (in the best creation). Because greed, impatience, prohibition all are the causes of man’s progress and protection. Therefore they must be used in the right way. Otherwise deviation invalidates the effect of Ahsan-e-Taqweem also.

  10. 9

Mahroom - The destitute who does not beg.

  11. 10

Aadoon - one who crosses the boundaries from Halaal to Haraam.
