Verses 5–31

فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًۭا جَمِيلًا﴿٥﴾

70:5So be patient, with a patience that is graceful.

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًۭا﴿٦﴾

70:6Indeed they see it to be far off,

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًۭا﴿٧﴾

70:7and We see it to be near.

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ﴿٨﴾

70:8The day when the sky will be like molten copper,¹

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ﴿٩﴾

70:9and the mountains like [tufts of] dyed wool,

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًۭا﴿١٠﴾

70:10and no friend will inquire about [the welfare of his] friend,

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ﴿١١﴾

70:11[though] they will be placed within each other’s sight. The guilty one will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children,²

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ﴿١٢﴾

70:12his spouse and his brother,

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ﴿١٣﴾

70:13his kin, which had sheltered him³

وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًۭا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ﴿١٤﴾

70:14and all those who are upon the earth, if that might deliver him.

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ﴿١٥﴾

70:15Never! Indeed, it is a blazing fire,⁴⁵

نَزَّاعَةًۭ لِّلشَّوَىٰ﴿١٦﴾

70:16which strips away the scalp.⁶

تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ﴿١٧﴾

70:17It invites him, who has turned back [from the truth] and forsaken [it],

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ﴿١٨﴾

70:18amassing [wealth] and hoarding [it].⁷

۞ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا﴿١٩﴾

70:19Indeed man has been created covetous:⁸

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًۭا﴿٢٠﴾

70:20anxious when an ill befalls him

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا﴿٢١﴾

70:21and grudging [charity] when good comes his way

إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ﴿٢٢﴾

70:22—[all are such] except the prayerful,

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ﴿٢٣﴾

70:23those who persevere in their prayers

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّۭ مَّعْلُومٌۭ﴿٢٤﴾

70:24and there is a known share in whose wealth

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ﴿٢٥﴾

70:25for the beggar and the deprived,⁹

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ﴿٢٦﴾

70:26and who affirm the Day of Retribution,

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ﴿٢٧﴾

70:27and those who are apprehensive of the punishment of their Lord

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍۢ﴿٢٨﴾

70:28(there is indeed no security from the punishment of their Lord)

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَٰفِظُونَ﴿٢٩﴾

70:29and those who guard their private parts

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ﴿٣٠﴾

70:30(apart from their spouses and their slave women, for then they are not blameworthy;

فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ﴿٣١﴾

70:31but whoever seeks beyond that—it is they who are the transgressors)¹⁰
