Makkan52 verses

68:7Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are guided.

68:8So do not obey the deniers,

68:9who are eager that you should be flexible, so that they [too] may be flexible [towards you].1

68:10And do not obey any vile swearer,

68:11scandal-monger, talebearer,2

68:12hinderer of all good, sinful transgressor,

68:13callous and, on top of that, baseborn3

68:14—[who behaves in such a manner only] because he has wealth and children.

68:15When Our signs are recited to him, he says, ‘Myths of the ancients!’

68:16Soon We shall brand him on his snout.4

68:17Indeed we have tested them just as We tested the People of the Garden when they vowed they would gather its fruit at dawn,5

68:18and they did not make any exception.6

68:19Then, a visitation from your Lord visited it while they were asleep.

68:20So, by dawn it was like a harvested field.

68:21At dawn they called out to one another,

68:22‘Get off early to your field if you have to gather [the fruits].’7

68:23So off they went, murmuring to one another:

68:24‘Today no needy man shall come to you in it.’

68:25And they set out at early morning, [considering themselves] able to deprive [the poor of its fruit].8

68:26But when they saw it, they said, ‘We have indeed lost our way!’

68:27‘No, it is we who have been deprived!’

68:28The most upright among them said, ‘Did I not tell you, ‘‘Why do you not glorify [Allah]?’’ ’9

68:29They said, ‘Immaculate is our Lord! We have indeed been wrongdoers!’

68:30Then they turned to one another, blaming each other.

68:31They said, ‘Woe to us! Indeed, we have been rebellious.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 17

1.It is said that Walid bin Mughaira was the very person. He had so many gardens etc. and in the pride of his possessions he used to joke on the preaching of Prophet (s.a.) and call him insane. Allah drew the attention towards the fact that He has put to test such type of people before also, that when haughtiness was created in them because of their power and wealth they stopped mingling with the poor, then We destroyed all their gardens the next night and in the morning everyone started asking forgiveness from Allah. It was Our favour that We accepted the Tauba, and it was made evident on them that it is not possible to get away from Our Authority. In the present world so many Ibne Mughaira are available, who in the intoxication of wealth, forget the poor and disregard Allah also. Quran draws their attention also, that whenever We wish, We can take back all the favours bestowed on them, and no one can prevent Us. For the God fearing persons, We have kept all the blessings in the next world and for the evil-doers, no promise of any sort has been given. Not a single book says that We will continue to bear them with. To Us, the importance is only for belief and fear of Allah. Its standard is that pride should not develop in man due to wealth. They should keep part for the poor and destitudes in their wealth. Otherwise it does not take much time for bad results to show. At that time, no pride can come to rescue and all the riches become a permanent burden.
