Commentary on this passage

Verse 1

1.Among the commentators there are very strong differences with regard to these sentences. Some say Nun is fish, and some say it is inkpot. Some have said it to be Nun of Rahman and with some it is Nun of Nafs. But the fact is, that its knowledge is not with anyone except the Lord. He shows the way He wishes. Man has no right to claim about the knowledge that is far from reality. Difference exits with the regard to the Pen also, that this is an ordinary pen or the pen with which it is written on Lauhe Mahfooz (divine tablet recording all mankind’s doing - divine Knowledge). There is argument about the Book. But all agree that these Verses are in reply to the taunts of Walid bin Mughaira that he had said the Prophet (s.a.) was mentally challenged. So Allah has referred him in such words as Hallaf, Mahin, Hammaz, Mashaa’a, Benamim, Mannaa’a Lil-khaire, Mu’atadi, Atheem, A’tal and Zaneem (one who continually swears, dishonoured, fault finder, great backbiter, miserly, transgressor. exceedingly sinful, bad tempered, low bred, low origin.), that this issue is very much serious and basis of religion and faith is on the intellect of the Prophet (s.a.) and that his statement is to be revelation of Allah. If doubt develops in this there will be no confidence left in religion. This much definitely becomes evident with the holy Verse that someone had attacked the sanity of the Prophet (s.a.). So Allah gave references of Book and Pen and clarified that the Prophet (s.a.) was not insane. It seems that in between Pen and the Book also, there is some issue. And it is that the one who attacks the sanity of the Prophet (s.a.), is also deserving to above mentioned epithets. Ponder on this.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 8

Mamnoon - Defective, and that which is cut off.

  2. 9

Khulqe Azeem - The best manner and the best religion. As in traditions the Quran has been personified into the Prophet’s character.

  3. 10

    Maftoon - Mad.

  4. Benefit

Pen is that which tells of the past and charts out the course of the future. It is the trustee of recognition and that which connects the relationship of time and space. And on the basis of these merits it was fixed as the method of education by the first revelation. And in this Surah it is considered worthy of being sworn by.
