Verses 32–48

68. Al-Qalam · The Pen

Makkan52 verses

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًۭا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ

68:32Maybe our Lord will give us a better one in its place. Indeed we earnestly beseech our Lord.’

كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ

68:33Such was their punishment; and the punishment of the Hereafter is surely greater, had they known.

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

68:34Indeed for the Godwary there will be gardens of bliss near their Lord.

أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

68:35Shall We treat those who submit [to Us] as [We treat] the guilty?

مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ

68:36What is the matter with you? How do you judge!

أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَٰبٌۭ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ

68:37Do you possess a scripture in which you read

إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ

68:38that you shall have in it whatever you choose?

أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ

68:39Do you have a pledge binding on Us until the Day of Resurrection, that you shall indeed have whatever you decide?1

سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ

68:40Ask them, which of them will aver [any of] that!2

أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَٰدِقِينَ

68:41Do they have any ‘partners’ [that they claim for Allah]? Then let them produce their partners, if they are truthful.

يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍۢ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

68:42The day when the catastrophe occurs and they are summoned to prostrate themselves, they will not be able [to do it].3

خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَٰلِمُونَ

68:43With a humbled look [in their eyes], they will be overcast by abasement. Certainly, they were summoned to prostrate themselves while they were yet sound.45

فَذَرْنِى وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

68:44So leave Me with those who deny this discourse. We will draw them imperceptibly [into ruin], whence they do not know.6

وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ

68:45I will grant them respite, for My devising is indeed sure.7

أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرًۭا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍۢ مُّثْقَلُونَ

68:46Do you ask them for a reward, so that they are weighed down with debt?8

أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ

68:47Do they possess [access to] the Unseen, so that they write it down?

فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌۭ

68:48So submit patiently to the judgement of your Lord, and do not be like the Man of the Fish who called out as he choked with grief.

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

Verse 44

1.This is an open revenge that We can punish those unjust people and its way is a gradual punishment which they will not even feel and one day they will be in the grip of punishment. Every man should be afraid of the punishment of this kind from Allah and should never be proud of the pleasures comforts of this world. Allah knows, when He sends punishment and destroys everything and no one will have the perception about it.

Verse 48

2.A preacher’s most important responsibility is that he should bear the torments and neither curse, nor run away from the people. He should stay among them and tolerate their oppressions. Allah has taught this to His Prophet (s.a.). and the same teachings were conveyed by the Prophet (s.a.) to his preachers in the community.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

    Imaanee Baligha - Those oaths who have great emphasis.

    Zaeem - Responsible.

    Kashafe Saaq - It is an idiom of severity and calamity. That is the man wants to run away from the responsibility and his calf is exposed.

  4. Benefit

    Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says: Sometimes a man commits sin and Allah gives him bounties instead of punishment and he forgets to repent for it and then the punishment encircles him. This is what is called Istedraaj. But it is only for the extreme kinds of sinners. Allah prevents him in the beginning. (Majmaul Bayan)

    Khashaya - A quality of the lowliness of the heart but its expression is also from the eyes.

    Tarhaqohum - That is humiliation has covered them.

    Istedraaj - To surround one with punishment in a gradual manner.

    Imla - to give respite. Kaid - Fraud. Here it is by way of the compensation. That We also know how to punish in a deceptive manner and our decree is very much stable.
