59. Al-Hashr · The Exile
Madinan24 verses
59:10And [also for] those who came in after them, who say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brethren who were our forerunners in the faith, and do not put any rancour in our hearts toward the faithful. Our Lord, You are indeed most kind and merciful.’1
59:11Have you not regarded the hypocrites who say to their brethren, the faithless from among the People of the Book, ‘If you are expelled, we will surely go out with you, and we will never obey anyone against you, and if you are fought against we will surely help you,’ and Allah bears witness that they are indeed liars.2
59:12Surely, if they were expelled they will not go out with them, and if they were fought against they will not help them, and [even if] they were to help them they will turn their backs [to flee] and eventually they will not be helped.
59:13Indeed they have a greater awe of you in their hearts than of Allah. That is because they are a lot who do not understand.3
59:14They will not fight against you together except in fortified townships or from behind walls. Their fierceness is great only within themselves. You suppose them to be united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a lot who do not exercise their reason,
59:15just like those who tasted the evil consequence of their conduct recently before them, and there is a painful punishment for them.4
59:16[The hypocrites are] like Satan when he tells man to disbelieve, but when he disbelieves, he says, ‘I am absolved of you. Indeed I fear Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.’

Commentary on this passage
Verse 12
1.These signs of hypocrites have deserved attention in all times that this character comes into existence in all periods of time and true Muslims in any have to remain alert of them. (i) Hypocrites plot with Jews, as today many Muslim rulers are conspiring with Israel and many seem to he restless for this evil. (ii) Hypocrites are not going to give support to anyone. They will not stand by the side of anyone. They always betray; as we see in today’s time. (iii) Hypocrites run away from the battlefield and this also is due to the love of Jews. As it is seen in the so-called leaders of Palestine.
Verse 14
2.These are the signs of Jews of which the believers are being warned. (i) Jews cannot firmly fight in the battlefield; they are always in the search of refuge that may be America itself. (ii) They can never be united among themselves. They can only make the propaganda of unity. Because for unity sincerity of intentions should be there and sincere action is required and in Jews these things can never be possible. (iii) They don’t have anything to do with wisdom. (iv) These are Shaitans, who after their purpose is over start showing annoyance and themselves pretend to be religious. Their profession is to defraud and their total business is running on fraud and deceit.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
It is the group after Ansar and Muhajireen whether it were those who succeeded them immediately or all Muslims who could come till the day of Qiyamat. This ayat is equally applicable to all of them.
- 2
These People of Book denotes the Bani Nuzayr, whom the hypocrites had promised to help under the leadership of Abdullah Ibn Ubayy and they gave the slip at the last moment which is the usual habit of hypocrites and which had already been foretold by Allah.
- 3
Apparently the believer is more fearful of Allah than other people and in the view of irreligiousness people the fear of people is more than the fear of Allah and this is because the people punish immediately while Allah keeps the punishment for the Hearafter.
- 4
It is for the infidels who had suffered defeat before Bani Nuzayr and they had been suitably punished and the consequences of those who come later will be same as that of the previous people.
Benefit
The 11th ayat is the proof that there is great similarity between hypocrisy and falsehood. The 14th ayat is the proof that there can be no co-operation between the hypocrites and the infidels. The 16th ayat is the announcement of the fact that hypocrisy is a kind of satanic act and nothing other than this.
