59:17So the fate of both is that they will be in the Fire, to remain in it [forever]. Such is the requital of the wrongdoers.1

59:18O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and let every soul consider what it sends ahead for Tomorrow, and be wary of Allah. Allah is indeed well aware of what you do

59:19Do not be like those who forget Allah, so He makes them forget their own souls. It is they who are the transgressors.2

59:20Not equal are the inmates of the Fire and the inhabitants of paradise. It is the inhabitants of paradise who are the successful ones.

59:21Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled [and] go to pieces with the fear of Allah. We draw such comparisons for mankind, so that they may reflect.3

59:22He is Allah—there is no god except Him—Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, He is the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

59:23He is Allah—there is no god except Him—the Sovereign, the All-holy, the All-benign, the Securer, the All-conserver, the All-mighty, the All-compeller, and the All-magnanimous. Clear is Allah of any partners that they may ascribe [to Him]!

59:24He is Allah, the Creator, the Maker, and the Former. To Him belong the Best Names. Whatever there is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 18

1.One of Shaitan’s tricks is that he encourages man to hoard and stops him from spending in charity by making him fear for the future while every Muslim believes that in following Shaitan, there is nothing except destruction in this world and the next.

Verse 21

2.Definitely if Quran is so heavy, that if sent down on a mountain, it will break into pieces, so the successors of Quran should be possessors of power and strength to that extent; as said by the Christians of Najran, if they say to a mountain to move from its place then it can move with one word of dua.

Verse 22

3.The mention of these characteristics are details of the greatness of Quran, that Quran is the speech of that Allah in Whom these attributes are present and evidently the higher the rank of the speaker his conversation is of the same credence. Therefore first you understand the greatness of the one who speaks, after that you feel the greatness of His conversation. Otherwise without that one cannot estimate His greatness and importance. In His particulars also He has mentioned those wonders, in which every attribute is a confirmed proof of the greatness of Quran. He is the king, and then this one is the kingdom of conversation. He is of pure attribute, and this is Quran-e-Pak (pure). He is without any imperfection, then this one is the graven image of excellence. He is the One who gives protection, then this one is proof of salvation. He is the One who looks after, then this one is the protector and guardian. He is the owner of honour, then this book is Kitab-e-Aziz (mighty). And he is strong and owner of grandeur, then in front of its greatness, the whole world’s eloquence and rhetoric are in prostration, and no one has the power to bring a parallel to it.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Regarding the attacks of Shaitan, Barsisa the worshipper of Bani Israel’s incident is well known. When a woman came to him for treatment and he fornicated with her. When she became pregnant he killed her. When people put him on the cross the Shaitan came to him and said that if he prostrated to him by gesturing he would save him. He did the prostration and died a death of infidel.

  2. 1

It is a dual noun. Those who misguide and those who are misguided, both belong to Hell.

  3. 2

To forget Allah is to ignore the acting upon His command and the forgetting by Allah is depriving one of the glance of Mercy.

  4. 3

The word ‘Lau’ indicates that it was impossible to descend the Quran on the mountain because a mountain does not have such a toleration capacity that it could bear the weight of its meanings and interpretations and this indicates the strength and courage of the Prophet (s.a.) on whom it was revealed. That he bore the weight of the whole Quran and after the Prophet (s.a.) who is strong and capable to be the centre of the truth of Quran. It is probably an indication of this why the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) compared the Quran and Able Bayt (a.s.) to Two heavy things (Thaqalayn). Both bear the weight of each other.

  5. Benefit

Mohaimeen - There are only five words in Arabic on the weight of this word. Muqeetar, Mubeetar, Mubeeqar, Mukheemar (mountain), Jabbar is used in nine places in the Quran to denote the oppressors and at one place it is used for Allah. That His being Jabbar is a merit and for the rest it is a defect and a shortcoming.
