57. Al-Hadid · The Iron

Madinan29 verses

57:11Who is it that will lend Allah a good loan, that He may multiply it for him and [that] there may be a noble reward for him?1

57:12The day you will see the faithful, men and women, with their light moving swiftly in front of them and on their right, [and they are greeted with the words:] ‘There is good news for you today! Gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever]. That is the great success.’2

57:13The day the hypocrites, men and women, will say to the faithful, ‘Please wait, that we may glean something from your light!’ They will be told: ‘Go back and grope for light!’ Then there will be set up between them a wall with a gate, with mercy within and punishment without.3

57:14They will call out to them, ‘Did we not use to be with you?’ They will say, ‘Yes! But you cast yourselves into perdition. You awaited and were skeptical, and [false] hopes deceived you until the edict of Allah came, and the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.45

57:15So today no ransom shall be taken from you or the faithless. The Fire will be your abode: it is your [ultimate] refuge and an evil destination.’6

57:16Is it not time yet for those who have faith that their hearts should be humbled for Allah’s remembrance and toward the truth which has come down [to them], and to be not like those who were given the Book before? Time took its toll on them and so their hearts were hardened, and many of them are transgressors.*

57:17Know that Allah revives the earth after its death. We have certainly made the signs clear for you, so that you may exercise your reason.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 14

1.The hypocrites even after reaching nearer to hell will not give up their mentality. And they will remember again the same companionship that they were with the believers. Then the believers’ reply will he that Paradise has no connection with company or companionship. This is the deal of belief and character. And your sins were that you had come with us having long hopes. Otherwise you were always thinking this how we get involved in calamities and disaster and you had doubted Prophet hood also. If we cast a look at the history of Islam, we easily see such hypocrites who were the evidence of all those characteristics. They will request the believers for mercy and that request will be rejected, and perhaps this request is also, for this reason that, in the world it had become their habit that though they used to always oppose but when some problem arises they used to come complaining and when the trouble got over, they used to go away. They had forgotten that, accounts of the world are different and the next world is different. In the world Allah also is the best among those who are merciful and He treats with mercy with all, good and bad. But in the next world He would put infidels and sinners in hell, and not show any kind of mercy and kindness. He has introduced Himself in the next world as Lillahul-Wahedul-Qahhar. (For the only One-unique vanquisher). So that man remains attentive to this subtle point and does not live the life in deception delusion.

Ayat 16th, Isa (a.s.) used to say that do not see the sins of others as lords see your own sins as a servant. There is the incident of Fuzail bin Ayaz in history that he climbed a wall in attraction for a wife and hearing this ayat from the neighbour he repented and was included among the reliable companions of Imam Sadiq (a.s.).
