Verses 1–16

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ﴿١﴾

56:1When the Imminent [Hour] befalls⁶

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ﴿٢﴾

56:2—there is no denying that it will befall—

خَافِضَةٌۭ رَّافِعَةٌ﴿٣﴾

56:3[it will be] lowering and exalting.

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّۭا﴿٤﴾

56:4When the earth is shaken violently,⁷

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا﴿٥﴾

56:5and the mountains are shattered into bits⁸

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءًۭ مُّنۢبَثًّۭا﴿٦﴾

56:6and become scattered dust,⁹

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا ثَلَٰثَةًۭ﴿٧﴾

56:7you will be three groups:¹⁰

فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ﴿٨﴾

56:8The People of the Right Hand—and what are the People of the Right Hand?!¹¹

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴿٩﴾

56:9And the People of the Left Hand—and what are the People of the Left Hand?!¹²

وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ﴿١٠﴾

56:10And the Foremost Ones are the foremost ones:

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿١١﴾

56:11they are the ones brought near [to Allah],

فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ﴿١٢﴾

56:12[who will reside] in the gardens of bliss.

ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٣﴾

56:13A multitude from the former [generations]¹³

وَقَلِيلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ﴿١٤﴾

56:14and a few from the latter ones.

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ﴿١٥﴾

56:15On brocaded couches¹⁴

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ﴿١٦﴾

56:16reclining on them, face to face.
