Verses 4–24

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ﴿٤﴾

54:4There have already come to them reports containing admonishment,¹

حِكْمَةٌۢ بَٰلِغَةٌۭ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ﴿٥﴾

54:5[and representing] far-reaching wisdom; but warnings are of no avail!

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍۢ نُّكُرٍ﴿٦﴾

54:6So turn away from them! The day when the Caller calls to a dire thing,²

خُشَّعًا أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌۭ مُّنتَشِرٌۭ﴿٧﴾

54:7they will emerge from the graves as if they were scattered locusts with a humbled look [in their eyes],³⁴⁵

مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌۭ﴿٨﴾

54:8scrambling toward the summoner. The faithless will say, ‘This is a hard day!’⁶

۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍۢ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌۭ وَٱزْدُجِرَ﴿٩﴾

54:9The people of Noah impugned before them. So they impugned Our servant and said, ‘A crazy man,’ and he was reviled.⁷

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌۭ فَٱنتَصِرْ﴿١٠﴾

54:10Thereat he invoked his Lord, [saying,] ‘I have been overcome, so help [me].’

فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍۢ مُّنْهَمِرٍۢ﴿١١﴾

54:11Then We opened the gates of the sky with pouring waters,⁸

وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًۭا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍۢ قَدْ قُدِرَ﴿١٢﴾

54:12and We made the earth burst forth with springs, and the waters met for a preordained purpose.

وَحَمَلْنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍۢ وَدُسُرٍۢ﴿١٣﴾

54:13We bore him on a vessel made of planks and nails,⁹

تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءًۭ لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ﴿١٤﴾

54:14which sailed [over the flood waters] in Our sight, as a retribution for him who was met with disbelief.

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَٰهَآ ءَايَةًۭ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ﴿١٥﴾

54:15Certainly We have left it as a sign; so is there anyone who will be admonished?¹⁰

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿١٦﴾

54:16So how were My punishment and warnings?

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ﴿١٧﴾

54:17Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌۭ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿١٨﴾

54:18[The people of] ‘Ad impugned [their apostle]. So how were My punishment and warnings?

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًۭا صَرْصَرًۭا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍۢ مُّسْتَمِرٍّۢ﴿١٩﴾

54:19Indeed We unleashed upon them an icy gale on an incessantly ill-fated day,¹¹

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍۢ مُّنقَعِرٍۢ﴿٢٠﴾

54:20knocking down people as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees.¹²¹³

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿٢١﴾

54:21So how were My punishment and warnings?!

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ﴿٢٢﴾

54:22Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ﴿٢٣﴾

54:23[The people of] Thamud denied the warnings,

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًۭا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًۭا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًۭا لَّفِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ وَسُعُرٍ﴿٢٤﴾

54:24and they said, ‘Are we to follow a lone human from ourselves?! Indeed then we would be in error and madness.’
