54:25‘Has the Reminder been cast upon him from among us? No, he is a self-conceited liar.’
54:26‘Tomorrow they will know who is a self-conceited liar.
54:27We are sending the She-camel as a trial for them; so watch them and be steadfast.

54:29But they called their companion, and he took [a knife] and hamstrung [her].*2
54:30So how were My punishment and My warnings?!
54:31We sent against them a single Cry, and they became like the dry sticks of a corral builder.3

54:32Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?
54:33And the people of Lot denied the warnings.

54:36He had already warned them of Our punishment, but they disputed the warnings.
54:37They even solicited of him his guests, whereat We blotted out their eyes, [saying,] ‘Taste My punishment and My warnings!’5
54:38Early at dawn there visited them an abiding punishment:6
54:39‘Taste My punishment and warnings!’
54:40Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

54:41Certainly the warnings did come to Pharaoh’s clan
54:42who denied all of Our signs. So We seized them with the seizing of One [who is] all-mighty, Omnipotent.
54:43Are your faithless better than those? Have you [been granted] [some sort of] immunity in the scriptures?7
54:44Do they say, ‘We are a confederate league’?

Commentary on this passage
Verse 37
1.To what extent this community was shameless that they did not listen and follow the Prophet (a.s.) and they joked on him and they reached to such limit in insulting that when guest came to Lut (a.s.) they said to him, that: Hand over them to us, we will do sodomy with them. In fact this community was deserving that they should have been destroyed and finished from their head down. But woe to this, that today’s progress-loving world do not take a warning from these incidents. Educated societies are fast moving on to road of shamelessness and that time is not far when like the people of Lut, their plank is also turned upside down and they get deep down into the valley of destruction.
Verse 40
2.This holy verse is repeated four times. After the story of Nuh, after the story of Hud, after the story of Saleh and after the story of Lut. And repeatedly the Muslim Ummah’s attention is drawn that they should take lesson from the condition and their destruction of the infidels and also that your strength is not more than those of the past communities. And no power of the world can stop the wrath of Allah.
Footnotes
Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
Mohtazar - That is everyone should present himself on his turn.
Benefit
In the 29th ayat the hamstringing of the she-camel is ascribed to one person while in Surah Shams it is said: Wa aqarooha. (They hamstrung her). It is probably because the people had jointly plotted the killing and thus that action is ascribed to all of them though it was only one person who had practically carried it out. Because those who abet a crime also are considered criminals.
- 2
Ta’ata - Some people say that Kedar bin Salaf got intoxicated and cut off the hamstrings of the she camel. While some people say that he moved ahead, caught the she-camel and hamstrung her.
- 3
Moh-tazir - One who makes a barn for storing the feed for his domestic animals. It should be clear that the previous Mohtazir with a zoe having a Zer on it is derived from Hazira.
- 4
Haasib - The wind that brings dirt and stones with it.
- 5
Zaif - It is a material noun which is applicable to singular as well as plural.
- 6
Azaabe-Mustaqar - The punishment that remains in force till the people are destroyed
- 7
