52:34Let them bring a discourse like it, if they are truthful.*

52:35Were they created from nothing? Or are they [their own] creators?

52:36Did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they have no certainty!

52:41Do they have [access to] the Unseen, which they write down?

52:45So leave them until they encounter the day when they will be thunderstruck,8

52:46the day when their guile will not avail them in any way, nor will they be helped.

52:47Indeed there is a punishment besides that for those who do wrong, but most of them do not know.

52:48So submit patiently to the judgement of your Lord, for indeed you fare before Our eyes. And celebrate the praise of your Lord when you rise [at dawn],910

52:49and also glorify Him during the night and at the receding of the stars.11

Commentary on this passage

Verse 32

1.The infidels and the polytheists had raised so many objections on the Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.s.) and with the help of those objections they had tried to reject Islam. The Merciful Lord has given replies and arguments to all their objections. At this point sixteen types of objection and problems have been discussed. (i) By the grace of Allah he [the Prophet (s.a.w.s)] is not a wizard or lunatic ? (ii) Are they saying, you are a poet and they are expecting times of misfortunes regarding yourself ? (iii) Do their intelligence prepares them to remain on infidelity ? (iv) Are they really misguided ? (v) Do they think that the Prophet (s.a.) has fabricated faith and religion on his own ? (vi) Were they born without a Creator ? (vii) Have they created themselves on their own ? (viii) Are they the creator of the earth and the sky so that there is no need of Allah ? (ix) Do they have the treasures of mercy of the Cherisher, so that Allah has made them the owner and the attorney ? (x) Are they the chief and the monopolist of the universe ? (xi) Do they have some ladder on which they climb and listen that Allah had not made him (Muhammad) the Prophet ? (xii) Are they the father of the sons and Allah has daughters ? (xiii) Has the Prophet (s.a.) asked from them wages for his prophethood that they do not want to be in debt ? (xiv) Are they the calligraphers of the unseen that they have not written his name in the list of the Prophets ? (xv) Are they playing some ruse or using a strategem and they have no idea of the course of action of Allah ? (xvi) Have they found some other God that they have become unconcerned of the real Allah ?

The 34th ayat presents an everlasting challenge. Even today infidels, instead of opposing Islam could bring a reply to Quran. But the problem is that the result is opposite and every person who contemplates realizes a new condition and does not remain without confessing to its greatless.

  4. 3

Moosaytir - Ruler or contractor. This word is used both with seen and suad which is indicated in the calligraphy of the Quran, just as the word Sirat and Basat is spelt both with seen and suad.

  13. Benefit

It should be clear that the infidels and the polytheists are asked eleven types of question at this point and the argument is exhausted and no excuse remains on the day of Qiyamat. After this they are left free and the glory of Allah be recited which is the expiation of sitting in every gathering.
