51:51Do not set up another god besides Allah. Indeed I am from Him a manifest warner to you.’

51:52So it was that there did not come any apostle to those who were before them but they said, ‘A magician,’ or ‘A crazy man!’

51:53Did they enjoin this upon one another?! Rather, they were a rebellious lot.1

51:54So turn away from them, as you will not be blameworthy.

51:55And admonish, for admonition indeed benefits the faithful.

51:56I did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me.

51:57I desire no provision from them, nor do I desire that they should feed Me.

51:58Indeed it is Allah who is the All-provider, Powerful and All-strong.

51:59Indeed the lot of those who do wrong [now] will be like the lot of their [earlier] counterparts. So let them not ask Me to hasten on [that fate].2

51:60Woe to the faithless for the day they are promised!

Commentary on this passage

Verse 55

1.Although the Almighty Allah has commanded the Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.s.) to be aloof from the people and has made it absolutely clear that there is no responsibility whatsoever on the Prophet for their waywardness. But even then it is fixed as the duty to remind, because of that people of faith are getting benefited. And it is a teaching for the Muslim theologians - learned men and lecturers of all the times (periods) that the effects may be visible on the people or may not be visible, but the process of reminding should continue so that getting benefited the common man also one day or the other comes to the path of good deeds.

Verse 57

2.Man is so undeserving to the extent that Allah commanded him to worship, so he thought that there must be some gain for Allah in that. And subsequently He had to make it clear that what benefit I can have from you? What do you have (what do you possess) so that on it I may have some expectations? Whatever is with you is all given to you by Myself.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The Lord of the Universe is Needless and Wise. Thus creation is neither aimless nor there is in it some benefit for the Creator. The aim of creation is to bestow perfection and it is not possible, therefore it is given through worship whose order of remembrance is according to seniority which means that the servant should obey and the Master should make him closest by His absolute perfection. This is the last stage of the perfection of man.

  2. 1

It is surprising that people of falsehood have the same views and behaviour wherever they might be living. In the East and the West of the world those who shave the beard give only one argument that where it is mentioned in the Quran that shaving the beard is haraam ? Everyone who does not give Khums says: All these are means of getting food and drinks. The property of Imam (a.s.) is halaal for his followers. It seems that every group teaches the succeeding people to mention the same excuse or the teacher of all of them is same.

  3. 2

Dhanoob - The result of sins, that is punishment. There is Zabar on Dhaal.
