49:1O you who have faith! Do not venture ahead of Allah and His Apostle, and be wary of Allah. Indeed Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.

49:2O you who have faith! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, and do not speak aloud to him like you shout to one another, lest your works should fail without your being aware.4

49:3Indeed those who lower their voices in the presence of the Apostle of Allah—they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for Godwariness. For them will be forgiveness and a great reward.

49:4Indeed those who call you from behind the apartments, most of them do not use their reason.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 4

To speak in a raised voice in the presence of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) is prohibited and to give preference to one’s opinion over his opinion is against belief. Now what can be said about those who consider their opinion logical and rational and label the command of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) to be rubbish. This is clearly against faith. (According to Ibn Hisham this ayat refers to the altercation of Umar and Abu Bakr in presence of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.).
