48:29Muhammad, the Apostle of Allah, and those who are with him are hard against the faithless and merciful amongst themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in worship], seeking Allah’s grace, and [His] pleasure. Their mark is [visible] on their faces, from the effect of prostration. Such is their description in the Torah and their description in the Evangel. Like a tillage that sends out its shoots and builds them up, and they grow stout and settle on their stalks, impressing the sowers, so that He may enrage the faithless by them. Allah has promised those of them who have faith and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward.*12

Commentary on this passage
Verse 29
1.It should be clear that these are not the qualities of different people. These are the general qualities of particular companions that the sincere companions are severe to the infidels and kind to the believers. They perform genuflections and prostrations and seek the pleasure of Allah and are ardent worshippers. Those who do not possess all these qualities and plot with the infidels and who allege Muslims to be apostate and kill them cannot be sincere companions.
2.This is also the common quality of companions and it is not an indication to different periods. That is in the first period the needle should come out, in the next it should be strengthened, in the next one fatness should develop and in the fourth period it should stand on its legs. Although here a confession is found that Islam became self reliant in the fourth stage. Various moral teachings are mentioned in this blessed Surah and they are presented as necessary conditions of faith. In the beginning the people of faith are addressed five times and in the end the sign of the sincere believer is mentioned. That one who does imbibe these teachings and prefers his own opinion over the opinion of the Prophet or one who raises his voice over that of the Prophet or call out to the Prophet to come out for them from the chambers of his wives. They were not true believers though they may be from any group. All these grades are established on the basis of their respect of the Prophet and not vice versa.

In the 29th ayat the ‘Min’ of Minhum is for Tabe’ez (variety): Though some commentators are of the view that by considering it to be descriptive all the companions could be included which is absolutely against Quranic and historical principles.
- 1
It should be clear that the meanings of togetherness is deeper and finer than companionship and company. This is the reason that companionship is not applicable for Allah from the aspect of togetherness. He is with the patient and pious people. Companionship is a material relationship and togetherness (proximity) is a spiritual relationship which is not achieved by every companion.

Actually it is the luminosity of the countenance and not the mark of prostration on the forehead and that is why instead of forehead, the face is mentioned. 3. These are the stages of the conditions of the believers that in the beginning there was weakness, then advent and then strength developed and then they stood up on their feet. The ‘zara’ is proof that it is not the effort of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). It indicates other companions also whose status is higher than ordinary companions.
