Madinan18 verses

49:5Had they been patient until you came out for them, it would have been better for them, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

49:6O you who have faith! If a vicious character brings you some news, verify it, lest you should visit [harm] on some people out of ignorance, and then become regretful for what you have done.1

49:7Know that the Apostle of Allah is among you. Should he comply with you in many matters, you would surely suffer. But Allah has endeared faith to you and made it appealing in your hearts, and He has made hateful to you faithlessness, transgression and disobedience. It is such who are the right-minded—*2

49:8a grace and blessing from Allah, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

49:9If two groups of the faithful fight one another, make peace between them. But if one party of them aggresses against the other, fight the one which aggresses until it returns to Allah’s ordinance. Then, if it returns, make peace between them fairly, and do justice. Indeed Allah loves the just.3

49:10The faithful are indeed brothers. Therefore, make peace between your brothers and be wary of Allah, so that you may receive [His] mercy.4

49:11O you who have faith! Let not any people ridicule another people: it may be that they are better than they are; nor let women [ridicule] women: it may be that they are better than they are. And do not defame one another, nor insult one another by [calling] nicknames. How evil are profane names subsequent to faith! As for those who are not penitent [of their past conduct]—such are the wrongdoers.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 6

1.It is said that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) sent Walid bin Uqbah bin Abu Mu’it to collect Zakat from Bani Mustaliq. On getting the news of the arrival of the representative of the Prophet (s.a.) they came out to welcome him. Walid spread the rumour that they were ready to fight and the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) started the process to respond to this threat. Suddenly an ayat was revealed to him that first he must investigate and only after that should he take any action. If this condition of the narration is correct it is only an announcement that Walid was a transgressor because otherwise a prophet is not such a simpleton who is unaware of the existing situations and becomes ready to wage a war on rumour.

Verse 9

2.In Islam the basis of co-operation is justice and not nationalism. All the Muslims should confront anyone who oppresses and must not become silent at the mention of making peace. Rather they should reform them with justice and equity.

Verse 11

3.The roots of discord among the believing brothers lie in the habit of people who make fun of others through their wisdom and intelligence. They make the taunting of others and calling them with strange names a means to show their superiority. Although all these are sinful and transgressing acts and transgression does not seem appropriate with belief. It behoves a Muslim to respect other Muslims and to remember them with respectful words and not to make fun of them in any way. So that he is not included among the unjust ones. Rather they should be regarded as those who maintain cordial relationships with brothers-in-faith and those who promote amity among the Muslims

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Though apparently it is said that only the information of a sinner is to be investigated, otherwise we shall have to regret but some scholars have derived that it is not necessary to investigate the news of ‘Adil’ (just) people and we can act upon it, which is in Islamic terminology is compared to ‘Khabar-eWahid’ (From a Solitary narrator).

  2. Benefit

The 7th ayat is proof that belief is not only the rational understanding and view. It is a beloved who has a place in the man’s heart. That is why love is compared to belief and vice versa.

  3. 2

It is the duty of the believers to obey the Prophet (s.a.) and act upon his commands. They must try to convince him as there are dire consequences of the same.

  4. 3

There are two groups but killing is through people that is why the verb of plural is used.

  5. 4

Islam advocates universal brotherhood but it does not want to force its opinion on non-Muslims. Therefore it informs the believers that your mutual relationship is that of brotherhood which also has equality and those who do not have regard for every type of equality, you have no right to call him a believer. There is a saying of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) in Bebaarul Anwaar, that a believer has thirty types of rights on his believing brother. They include every facet of life. One who is careless of a believer is himself not a believer.
