48. Al-Fath · The Victory

Madinan29 verses

48:24It is He who withheld their hands from you, and your hands from them, in the valley of Makkah, after He had given you victory over them, and Allah sees best what you do.1

48:25They are the ones who disbelieved and barred you from the Sacred Mosque, and kept the offering from reaching its destination. And were it not for [certain] faithful men and faithful women, whom you did not know—lest you should trample them, and thus the blame for [killing] them should fall on you unawares; [He held you back] so that Allah may admit into His mercy whomever He wishes. Had they been separate, We would have surely punished the faithless among them with a painful punishment.*23

48:26When the faithless nourished bigotry in their hearts, the bigotry of pagan ignorance, Allah sent down His composure upon His Apostle and the faithful, and made them abide by the word of Godwariness, for they were the worthiest of it and deserved it, and Allah has knowledge of all things.4

48:27Certainly Allah has fulfilled His Apostle’s vision in all truth: You will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, God willing, in safety and without any fear, with your heads shaven or hair cropped. So He knew what you did not know, and He assigned [you] besides that a victory near at hand.5

48:28It is He who has sent His Apostle with guidance and the true religion, that He may make it prevail over all religions, and Allah suffices as witness.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 24

1.In the year 7 Hijri the Muslims entered Mecca with the aim of Umratul Qaza and the infidels did not trouble them in any way and the Muslims performed the Umrah in a peaceful manner. This was the special mercy of Allah that had been promised because these were the same people who had not allowed even the sacrificial animals to enter Mecca the previous year, leave alone human beings. The Almighty Allah has stopped hostilities at this juncture because there were some people in Mecca who could not openly express their belief and thus it was clear that they would also have been killed at the hands of the Muslim warriors. This would have caused a serious loss to Islam. Then even those who were to later embraced Islam would have been deprived of this bounty. That is why Allah restrained them from war so that they should also get a chance to enter divine mercy. This clearly shows how the faith of dissimulation is liked by Allah that for this reason even fighting was stopped. Because if Jihad had occurred those who professed Islam openly would have survived but those who concealed their belief would have been destroyed which was not allowed by the Lord of the Worlds. Therefore no Muslim has any right to object against Taqaiyya.

Verse 27

2.The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) had dreamt that he was entering Mecca along with his companions some of whom had shaved their heads and some had shortened the hair. When they returned from Hudaibiya people began to taunt that what happened 10 the dream? The Almighty fulfilled this dream in the 7th year of Hijri and made it absolutely clear that the time of the actualization of the dream had not been fixed so the Prophet should not be blamed and neither any Muslim has a right to raise such objections. Allah is true to His word. He certainly fulfills His promise but He is not responsible for the opinions of other people.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Some people think that ‘Batn-e-Mecca’ denotes the place of Hudaibiya as it is the closet spot to Mecca, and some people have said it denotes the area within Mecca. That is when the Muslims entered Mecca in 7th Hijri for the lapsed Hajj and there arose no need for war, it was as if Allah had restrained the hands of everyone.

  2. Benefit

Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s.) said regarding the Jihad of Amirul Momineen (a.s.) that he used to see the believer in the loins of an infidel and spare him. He has explained it with the 25th ayat that if the believer had separated the punishment would have descended on the infidels. For the time being the Reappearance of Imam Mahdi (a.s.) is also dependent on this.

  3. 2

Maakoof means Mahboos. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) had brought with him seventy camels in the 6th AH to sacrifice them but the infidels had not allowed their entry also. So the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was compelled to slaughter them outside Mecca.

  4. 3

Marrah - Problem and difficulty. Tazeelo means Tameezo. That is the Muslims and the infidels had been distinguished.

  5. 4

    Hamiyat - Pride, Obstinacy.

  6. 5

That is the fulfillment of the dream in the same year had many points of hidden wisdom which none except Allah knew. And on the same basis for the peace of mind He Himself made the Treaty of Hudaibiya as the manifest victory and Khyber was also conquered. So that the aspirations of Muslims are not defeated and their beliefs are not endangered. It is said that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) had also married in Mecca and tried to give a feast for it but the infidels were emphatic they leave the city in three days and in this way a public feast could not be held.
