44. Ad-Dukhaan · The Smoke

Makkan59 verses

44:5as an ordinance from Us. We have been sending [apostles]

44:6as a mercy from your Lord—indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing—

44:7the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatever is between them, should you have conviction.

44:8There is no god except Him: He gives life and brings death, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.

44:9But they play around in doubt.

44:10So watch out for the day when the sky brings on a manifest smoke,1

44:11enveloping the people. [They will cry out:] ‘This is a painful punishment.

44:12Our Lord! Remove this punishment from us. Indeed we have believed!’

44:13What will the admonition avail them, when a manifest apostle had already come to them,

44:14but they turned away from him, and said, ‘A tutored madman?’

44:15Indeed We will withdraw the punishment a little; but you will revert [to your earlier ways].

44:16The day We shall strike with the most terrible striking, We will indeed take vengeance [on them].

44:17Certainly We tried the people of Pharaoh before them, when a noble apostle came to them,

44:18[saying,] ‘Give over the servants of Allah to me; indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.

44:19Do not defy Allah. Indeed I bring you a manifest authority.

44:20I seek the protection of my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me.

44:21And if you do not believe me, keep out of my way.’

44:22Then he invoked his Lord, [saying,] ‘These are indeed a guilty lot.’

44:23[Allah told him,] ‘Set out by night with My servants; for you will be pursued.

44:24Leave behind the sea unmoving; for they will be a drowned host.’2

44:25How many gardens and springs did they leave behind!

44:26Fields and splendid places,

Commentary on this passage

Verse 10

1.On account of the mischief of polytheists, Allah sent His chastisement on them and they were struck with famine. The fields dried, animals were dying and people strived hard. They requested the Prophet (a.s.) to save them and said we believe in you. Allah removed the chastisement but in keeping with their habit they revolted and did not bring faith. Allah consoled His Apostle: Do not be afraid! Whenever the chastisement comes it will not turn back. Then they will know their deeds.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

From the statements of Quran we know that once it was revealed on the heart of the Prophet (s.a.) on Shab-e-Qadr then for 23 yean it was revealed continuously and this gradual revelation commenced from 27th Rajab. That is why it is called the Day of Besat, otherwise the night of Besat would have been Shab-e-Qadr and not 27th Rajab.

  2. 1

It is not smoke from a fire, rather it is a strange form of punishment where one feels suffocated and only smoke is visible from the ground to the sky. Some people think it is figurative which is created by the famine of Mecca. And the next terrible punishment is the annihilation of the infidels at Badr which occurred after some respite. But traditions mention red smoke before Qiyamat and in this way the mention of respite is not real but in a conditional way. That if they are again given respite they will do the same and there would be no change in it.2

  3. 2

Rahoo - Silent - Fakeheen that is enjoying in comfort and luxury.
