44:27and the affluence wherein they rejoiced!

44:28So it was; and We bequeathed them to another people.1

44:29So neither the sky wept for them, nor the earth; nor were they granted any respite.

44:30Certainly We delivered the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment

44:31of Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a tyrant among the transgressors.

44:32Certainly We chose them knowingly above all the nations,2

44:33and We gave them some signs in which there was a manifest test.

44:34These ones say,

44:35‘It will be only our first death, and we shall not be resurrected.

44:36Bring our fathers back [to life], if you are truthful.’

44:37Are they better, or the people of Tubba‘, and those who were before them? We destroyed them; indeed, they were guilty.

44:38We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them for play.

44:39We did not create them except with consummate wisdom; but most of them do not know.

44:40Indeed the Day of Judgement is the tryst for them all,

44:41the day when a friend will not avail a friend in any way, nor will they be helped,

44:42except for him on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed He is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.

44:43Indeed the tree of Zaqqum3

44:44will be the food of the sinful.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 29

1.Firon’s misfortune was that when chastisement came on them, they did not get respite for a moment and they were all drowned in the Nile. The sign of their disgrace was that no effect of their ruin was seen on the earth or on the sky. They thought, when they die the day of Resurrection will come soon. Naturally after the death of their “God” the whole universe should have been finished. But Allah clarified that even if a liar becomes god and dies, no effect will be seen on the earth or on the sky. Yes, the believers of Allah die in the way of Allah, the earth and the sky weep on the martyrdom. As stated about the martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.) that whenever a stone was raised at Baitul Muqaddas blood gushed below it and blood rained from the sky. Many incidences are quoted in history that when a pious, true and sincere man dies the effects are seen on the earth and the sky. It is another thing however, that the martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.) was the highest martyrdom of all and its effect was also very great and from Kerbala to Baitul-Muqaddas the whole ground was afflicted. Perhaps this is also the ascension of the martyrdom that its effects should reach Masjid-e-Aqsa and the earth and the sky trembled.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

In the 18th ayat there is a view that the addresser are ‘Servants of Allah’ and the people intended are the people of Piron, that was not actually deserving of being called ‘Servants of Allah’. And in this way Addoo Ilaiyya would be the following of command and to submit to obedience.

  2. 1

It was the misfortune of people of Misr that they supported Firon and in the end they were drowned and all their treasures fell to the share of different people. In various stages of history different people ruled Egypt. Like the Assyrians, Babylonians, Abyssinians, Persians, Greek, Roman, Arabs, Toluene, Akshidi, Fatimids, Ayyubids, Turks, French and Englishmen. And even today this wretched nation is in the hands of America and Israel, though apparently it is under a Muslim government.

  3. 2

The Jews are not the selected people of the world due to their excellence of character. It was only so because Allah gave them this honour that numerous people from them will get the status of Prophethood and Messengership and they were sent as representatives of Allah. It is another thing that these wretched nations denied them and became eligible for a painful chastisement and they could not gain any benefit from these divine representatives.

  4. 3

Zaqqoom is cactus which has a very bad taste and its effect is also hot and that is why the food of the inmates of Hell is said to be Zaqqoom which will be so hot that even after reaching the stomach it would begin to boil.

  5. Benefit

‘Tubba’ was the title of the kings of Yemen but this incident pertains to Asad Abu Karb who was of a good character and in the 5th Hijri he had secretly brought faith in the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). That is why the criticism is directed to the people.
