Makkan53 verses

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ رُوحًۭا مِّنْ أَمْرِنَا ۚ مَا كُنتَ تَدْرِى مَا ٱلْكِتَٰبُ وَلَا ٱلْإِيمَٰنُ وَلَٰكِن جَعَلْنَٰهُ نُورًۭا نَّهْدِى بِهِۦ مَن نَّشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِىٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍۢ مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ

42:52Thus have We imbued you with a Spirit of Our command. You did not know what the Book is, nor what is faith; but We made it a light that We may guide by its means whomever We wish of Our servants. Indeed, you guide to a straight path,1

صِرَٰطِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ أَلَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَصِيرُ ٱلْأُمُورُ

42:53the path of Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Indeed all matters return to Allah!

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

Verse 52

1.It is impossible for an imperfect man to be made a prophet and messenger as he would be unaware of the meanings of the Holy Quran before revelation from Allah and would not know the meaning of faith. That is why commentators have pointed out that this is the expression of this fact that the Holy Book and the faith means divine law and it is the highest thing for a human being that anyone from the world cannot inquire about humanity. This is special favour of Allah that He makes a man truthful and whenever He likes He makes people friendly and its time and period is not fixed and He is the Master of His will.

  1. Benefit

    Some people pose the question that what was the religion of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) before Besat (Proclamation of Prophethood). Some think it was Christianity and some say it was the faith of Ibrahim (a.s.). But the saying of Ali (a.s.) shows that he had his own religion and a system on which he acted. And the Ruhul Quds (Angel) used to remain with him from the beginning and to confirm these teaching to him. Thus prophethood was there before Besat and Prophethood began before Besat.

    Quran indeed is a spirit with which the life of every man is attached and without it humanity is a soulless body. It is soul from its original aspect and Nur (light) from the aspect of guidance, without which man cannot reach the aimed destination.
