Makkan53 verses

42:44Those whom Allah leads astray have no guardian apart from Him. You will see the wrongdoers, when they sight the punishment, saying, ‘Is there any way for a retreat?’

42:45You will see them being exposed to it, humbled by abasement, furtively looking askance. The faithful will say, ‘Indeed the losers are those who have ruined themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, the wrongdoers will abide in lasting punishment.

42:46They have no awliya to help them besides Allah. There is no way out for those whom Allah leads astray.’

42:47Respond to your Lord before there comes a day for which there will be no revoking from Allah. On that day you will have no refuge, nor will you have [any chance for] denial [of your sins].*

42:48But if they disregard [your warnings], [keep in mind that] We have not sent you as their keeper. Your duty is only to communicate. Indeed when We let man taste Our mercy, he boasts about it; but should an ill visit him because of what his hands have sent ahead, then man is very ungrateful.*1

42:49To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He creates whatever He wishes; He gives females to whomever He wishes, and males to whomever He wishes,2

42:50or He combines them males and females, and makes sterile whomever He wishes. Indeed, He is all-knowing, all-powerful.

42:51It is not [possible] for any human that Allah should speak to him except through revelation or from behind a veil, or send a messenger who reveals by His permission whatever He wishes. Indeed He is all-exalted, all-wise.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 49

1.There are four signs of divine’s nature that He grants to whom He pleases : He grants daughters to whom He pleases and sons or both sons and daughters and He makes whom He pleases barren and He does according to His will. To make someone barren is not the defect of His creation and to grant a son is not a sign of a wonder. On the contrary He has interpreted both daughter and sons as a gift and mentioned the daughter first. As if to say that daughter is honored before. As an example He has granted a daughter to His beloved Apostle and has continued her generation till today. This is the best argument of the importance of a daughter. Daughters apparently create responsibilities and hardship in the world but according to the blessing and reward her importance is that Allah grants His blessings and rewards on trouble and not on comforts and rests.

Verse 51

2.There are three modes of speech between Allah and His Apostles. (1) Allah speaks to him by revelation. (2) Or speaks from behind a veil or creates a voice in the things. (3) Or to send His message through Angels. Angel is only for bringing communication, he is not a teacher. And it is the best proof of humanity and excellence of a human that an Angels comes to him with messages from Allah and he is not himself the sender of the messages.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

In the 47th ayat Nakeer is in the meaning of Inkar (refusal) or protector. And the 48th ayat indicates that the worldly bounty is equal to just tasting in comparison to the Hereafter and nothing more.

  2. 1

The Almighty Allah has associated Mercy with His own Being and stated that evil and sin is the result of the character of man. But the misfortune of man is that on getting some favour he becomes proud as if all that he has achieved is due to his own capabilities and on facing bad times he begins to disbelieve as if Allah has done some sort of injustice on him, and has sent this calamity on him without his being deserving of it.

  3. 2

It should be clear that Allah has made the son and the daughter both as the masterpiece of His creation and He has stated both of them to be gift and mercy for men, so that he can realize the greatness and value of them both and no one has the right that considering one as gift he should welcome it and considering the other as a calamity spurns it. Or that he imagines that the perfection of creation is present in one and the other shows its defect. This is ignorant interpretation that does not behove any Muslim and every Muslim should refrain from such ignorant views.

  4. Benefit

Ali (a.s.) has said : Revelation is of seven types: (1) Revelation of Prophethood. (2) Revelation of Ilham (inspiration). (3) Revelation by indication. (4) Revelation of Taqdeer (destiny). (5) Revelation of command. (6) Revelation of Kizb (falsehood) and (7) Revelation of News. [Ref.: (1) 4:263 (2) 16:68 (3) 19:11 (4) 32:12 (5) 5: III (6) 6:112 (7) 21:73 Behaarul Anwaar]
