Verses 61–68

4. An-Nisaa · The Women

Madinan176 verses

4:61When they are told, ‘Come to what Allah has sent down and [come] to the Apostle,’ you see the hypocrites keep away from you aversely.

4:62But how will it be when an affliction visits them because of what their hands have sent ahead? Then they will come to you, swearing by Allah, ‘We desired nothing but to do good and to bring about comity.’

4:63They are the ones whom Allah knows as to what is in their hearts. So let them alone, and advise them, and speak to them concerning themselves far-reaching words.1

4:64We did not send any apostle but to be obeyed by Allah’s leave. Had they, when they wronged themselves, come to you and pleaded to Allah for forgiveness, and the Apostle had pleaded for them [to Allah]for forgiveness, they would have surely found Allah all-clement, all-merciful.2

4:65But no, by your Lord! They will not believe until they make you a judge in their disputes, then do not find within their hearts any dissent to your verdict and submit in full submission.

4:66Had We prescribed for them, [commanding]: ‘Slay [the guilty among] your folks or leave your habitations,’ they would not have done it except a few of them. And if they had done as they were advised, it would have been better for them and stronger in confirming [their faith].3

4:67Then We would surely have given them from Us a great reward,

4:68and We would have guided them to a straight path.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 62

1.It is also perpetual character that people get their work done with the help of enemies of Allah while they convince the others as it being for their own good. Allah has commanded to remain distant from this fraud and while it is ordered to guide to the right path.

Verse 64

2.The Holy Quran draws attention of hypocrites: you have been converted to Islam. It is your duty to be obedient. Then why don’t you obey him? Remember, if you eschew from my Apostles, your forgiveness will not concede to you. The personality of the messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) is so magnificent that nary a man in the world be a true believer without conceding to his formal decision and without recommendation of Prophet (s.a.w.s.), a man will not obtain pardon from Allah and Our Prophet (s.a.w.s.) will not recommend the hypocrites in hereafter. I wish, if people of Islam would know the grandeur of Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and came under his protection and would practice upon the directives of Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and would keep faith on Prophet’s intercession.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

There is a dispute between a Jew and a hypocrite. The Jew told the hypocrite bribe. The hypocrite suggested that Ka’ab bin Ashraf gave the correct judgment. The Almighty Allah has chastised the hypocrite and pointed to two facts: (1) The hypocrites only seek benefits from the religion and wherever there is a risk of loss they change their views. (2) One should not agree to the Verdict of the Jews because they will always try to gain their own benefits. The hypocrite did not agree to arbitration due to his truthfulness and equity of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) because of some anterior motives.

  2. 2

There are three stages of criticism: In the first instance an objection is issued. In the second stage advice is given and lastly the propagation should be continuous. If the scholars and missionaries had acted upon all three of them the Muslim society would have been very close to their reformation of deeds.

  3. 3

Islam does not advocate seeking arbitration from cheaters and deceitful people. But it has indeed made the holy personalities a channel for forgiveness. That is why it orders them to consult the Prophet (s.a.). This does not denote the rights of people because they can be remitted. Isteghfar is not required for them.
