Madinan176 verses

4:55Of them are some who believe in him, and of them are some who deter [others] from him; and hell suffices for a blaze!

4:56Indeed We shall soon make those who deny Our signs enter a Fire: as often as their skins become scorched, We shall replace them with other skins, so that they may taste the punishment. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.1

4:57As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We shall admit them into gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever. In it, there will be chaste mates for them, and We shall admit them into a deep shade.

4:58Indeed Allah commands you to deliver the trusts to their [rightful] owners, and to judge with fairness when you judge between people. Excellent indeed is what Allah advises you. Indeed Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.23

4:59O you who have faith! Obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those vested with authority among you. And if you dispute concerning anything, refer it to Allah and the Apostle, if you have faith in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more favourable in outcome.4

4:60Have you not regarded those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you? They desire to seek the judgment of fake deities, though they were commanded to reject them, and Satan desires to lead them astray into far error.56

Commentary on this passage

Verse 56

1.Somebody asked Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) what is the fault of the other (replaced) skin? Why will it bum? Imam said: It is the second and as well as the first. Just as a brick is broken and again prepared like the first one. Though it is prepared a second time but actually it is similar to the first.

Verse 58

2.The word entrusted thing is general, whether it is wealth, or knowledge, or secret or a command of law, which is entrusted to another. It should be returned to its owner and embezzling it is unlawful. And so has our Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) brought the Holy Quran and his Progeny from Allah, presented it to his believers and have not taken them back with him when he died.

Verse 59

3.Imam Razi says: Infallibility is necessary for unconditional obedience and infallible means Ijma (consensus). It is my request that necessity of infallibility is thus proved. It is also proved that necessity of infallibility is not only in Shia religion, it is in Ahle Sunnat too. As for the matter whether it should be Ijma or Ahle Bayt; for this too we should refer to Allah and His Prophet (s.a.). Allah has made His Prophet’s Progeny as the centre of purification and Prophet (s.a.) has announced them to be equals of Quran and one of the two weighty things; while for Ijma there is no such clear guidance. Thus only the obedience of the infallible Ahle Bayt (a.s.) is obligatory and it is not obligatory to obey every ruler. This concept is the creation of Shaitan’s party and the monarchs.

Verse 60

4.It is indeed surprising that Jews ask Prophet (s.a.) for decision while Muslims ask Jews for it. But at present also we find that when people feel danger from their own folk, they go others so that they can gel their work done through spurious means. After the demise of Prophet (s.a.), Amirul Momineen (a.s.) rejected the offer of Abu Sufyan and said: Truth can tolerate being deprived but it cannot tolerate the suppport of falsehood.

Imam Baqir (a.s.) says that, “We Ahle Bayt (a.s.) are the actual envied ones.” It is also a well-known fact that more fortunate a person is the more he is envied. Those who do not have any distinction can be enviers but not the envied.

Whether the rulership is as wilayat (guardianship) or as a Judge both are based on Justice. If one leaves justice he shall be sent to Hell. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) says that one who is appointed as a Judge is as if he has been slaughtered without a knife.

  6. 6

The repetition of the word obedience. Shows that the obedience of the Holy Prophet (s.a.) is forever and his saying is a confirmed source of Shari at. And the Holy Prophet’s obedience is included in the obedience of Allah. That is, he is also supposed to obey Allah.
