4:69Whoever obeys Allah and the Apostle—they are with those whom Allah has blessed, including the prophets and the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous, and excellent companions are they!1

4:70That is the grace of Allah, and Allah suffices as knower [of His creatures].

4:71O you who have faith! Take your precautions, then go forth in companies, or go forth en masse.2

4:72Among you is indeed he who drags his feet, and should an affliction visit you, he says, ‘It was certainly Allah’s blessing that I did not accompany them!’

4:73But should a bounty from Allah come to you, he will say—as if there were no [tie of friendship and] affection between you and him—‘I wish I were with them so that I had achieved a great success!’

4:74Let those who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter fight in the way of Allah; and whoever fights in the way of Allah, and then is slain, or he subdues [the enemy], We shall soon give him a great reward.3

4:75Why should you not fight in the way of Allah and the oppressed men, women, and children, who say, ‘Our Lord, bring us out of this town whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us a guardian from Yourself, and appoint for us a helper from Yourself’?4

Commentary on this passage

Verse 69

1.The main claim of Islam is to be obedient to Allah and His Prophet. According to its opinion the welfare of the world and hereafter is hidden in obedience. One who abstains from this remains in loss. Besides the benefits of the world, a person associates with the pious people and Apostles in hereafter. The Holy Quran states this is best and most sufficient company for them.

Verse 71

2.This is a common law for the faithful persons and is generally applicable in all situations. This is an intellectual demand that as a human wants to survive, they must make preparation for protection and this preparation always keeps on changing. A man has to prepare himself with arms and equipment in this era of rockets and missiles. Experience is the great evidence that knowledge and acts are the roots of destruction. When knowledge finds the correct way, the mind traverses lofty heights and the ways are evident. Then there are those atomic experiments initiated on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the abuse of knowledge and arts becomes evidently clear. It is a duty of each Muslim to prepare his own safeguard so that he becomes devoid of fear in times of danger. Today, in the world, many large nations keep a huge stockpile of bombs and warheads while they are intolerant towards the preparation of even a single warhead by a Muslim nation. Because they know that Islam will be safe from their attack and their supremacy will be in danger. It is a duty of all Muslims to create awareness for even small experimentation so that they can repel their attack and protect themselves. Good deeds and manners are most important in Islam. Due to moral character too, the attack of enemies from east and west can be prevented. The present era poses and conveys very dangerous and heavy attack of enemy countries.

Verse 75

3.After the migration, some of the Muslims remained in Mecca. The infidels harassed them and Muslims had no other way to escape. Then Islam ordered them for war and gave a reference of Allah and His Apostles and His believers and said that war in the way of Allah is enough for believers and was necessary to draw the attention of weak minded people towards emotional matters: People of your community are being trampled and you shirk from war? Think, if you were in their place and they would turn negligent of you, then what would be your condition and your opinion of them? After that Islam has reminded them of the Godly Power and in reply to atheistic doubt said: Those who fight in the way of Allah are never in loss. They get reward in the world and hereafter.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The Almighty cannot make something incumbent which is beyond the capacity of the people. The command of slaying each other was given due to their serious crimes. But there are indeed such believers present that Allah gives such an order they would act upon it immediately.

Benefit: Ashadde Thabeetan signifies that obedient makes the belief (Eimaan) more firm.

The 69th ayat shows that the society is based on four factors: Prophets, guides, true teachers and those who sacrificed themselves.

  2. 2

The siddiq is one whose action testifies to his word and he should be able to inculcate truthfulness of character among others. In reality such a person cannot be anyone other than a Masoom. The Martyrs are those who sacrifice their life for Allah and Allah also bestows them the status of ‘witness.’

  3. 3

Thabat means group. Nafar means going out. Here it means going out of ones house for war. Tabta means to instigate to be lazy. Shahid = Present

  4. 4

This shows that the Jihad of Islam is not for material gains. It is the sacrificing of materiel things for the betterment of the Hereafter. Islam does not advocate Jihad for conquering nations, annexing territories, exploiting new markets and raw materials.
