Verses 63–82

أَتَّخَذْنَٰهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا أَمْ زَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ﴿٦٣﴾

38:63ridiculing them, or do [our] eyes miss them [here]?’

إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَحَقٌّۭ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ ٱلنَّارِ﴿٦٤﴾

38:64That is indeed a true account of the contentions of the inmates of the Fire.

قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ مُنذِرٌۭ ۖ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَٰهٍ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ٱلْوَٰحِدُ ٱلْقَهَّارُ﴿٦٥﴾

38:65Say, ‘I am just a warner, and there is no god except Allah, the One, the All-paramount,

رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفَّٰرُ﴿٦٦﴾

38:66the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the All-mighty, the All-forgiver.’

قُلْ هُوَ نَبَؤٌا۟ عَظِيمٌ﴿٦٧﴾

38:67Say, ‘It is a great prophesy,

أَنتُمْ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضُونَ﴿٦٨﴾

38:68of which you are disregardful.

مَا كَانَ لِىَ مِنْ عِلْمٍۭ بِٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰٓ إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ﴿٦٩﴾

38:69I have no knowledge of the Supernal Elite when they contend.¹

إِن يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ إِلَّآ أَنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرٌۭ مُّبِينٌ﴿٧٠﴾

38:70All that is revealed to me is that I am just a manifest warner.’

إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًۭا مِّن طِينٍۢ﴿٧١﴾

38:71When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am about to create a human being out of clay.

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ﴿٧٢﴾

38:72So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down in prostration before him.’

فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ﴿٧٣﴾

38:73Thereat the angels prostrated, all of them together,

إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ ٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ﴿٧٤﴾

38:74but not Iblis; he acted arrogantly and he was one of the faithless.

قَالَ يَٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَىَّ ۖ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْعَالِينَ﴿٧٥﴾

38:75He said, ‘O Iblis! What keeps you from prostrating before that which I have created with My [own] two hands? Are you arrogant, or are you one of the exalted ones?’²

قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْهُ ۖ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍۢ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍۢ﴿٧٦﴾

38:76‘I am better than him,’ he said. ‘You created me from fire and You created him from clay.’

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌۭ﴿٧٧﴾

38:77He said, ‘Begone hence, for you are indeed an outcast,

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ لَعْنَتِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ﴿٧٨﴾

38:78and indeed My curse will be on you till the Day of Retribution.’

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ﴿٧٩﴾

38:79He said, ‘My Lord! Respite me till the day they will be resurrected.’

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ﴿٨٠﴾

38:80Said He, ‘You are indeed among the reprieved

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ﴿٨١﴾

38:81until the day of the known time.’

قَالَ فَبِعِزَّتِكَ لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ﴿٨٢﴾

38:82He said, ‘By Your might, I will surely pervert them,
