Makkan182 verses

37:83Indeed Abraham was among his followers,

37:84when he came to his Lord with a sound heart [untainted by sin].

37:85When he said to his father and his people, ‘What is it that you are worshiping?

37:86Is it a lie, gods other than Allah, that you desire?

37:87Then what is your idea about the Lord of all the worlds?’

37:88Then he made an observation of the stars

37:89and said, ‘Indeed I am sick!’*

37:90So they went away leaving him behind.

37:91Then he stole away to their gods and said, ‘Will you not eat?

37:92Why do you not speak?’

37:93Then he attacked them, striking forcefully.

37:94They came running towards him.

37:95He said, ‘Do you worship what you have yourselves carved,

37:96when Allah has created you and whatever you make?’

37:97They said, ‘Build a structure for him and cast him into a huge fire.’

37:98So they sought to outwit him, but We made them the lowermost.

37:99He said, ‘Indeed I am going toward my Lord, who will guide me.’

37:100‘My Lord! Give me [an heir], one of the righteous.’

37:101So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son.

37:102When he was old enough to assist in his endeavour, he said, ‘My son! I see in dreams that I am sacrificing you. See what you think.’ He said, ‘Father! Do whatever you have been commanded. If Allah wishes, you will find me to be patient.’

37:103So when they had both surrendered [to Allah’s will], and he had laid him down on his forehead,

37:104We called out to him, ‘O Abraham!1

37:105You have indeed fulfilled your vision! Thus indeed do We reward the virtuous!

37:106This was indeed a manifest test.’

37:107Then We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,2

Commentary on this passage

Verse 83

1.The word Shia is a Quranic term for the good virtuous people because Ibrahim (a.s.) had followed the way of Nuh (a.s.) and due to this he has been called as Shia of Nuh (a.s.). According to traditions there was a period of around 240 years between them. If after the long period Ibrahim (a.s.), he can be included in the Shias of Nuh (a.s.) then why can the believers of today not be Shia of Ali (a.s.)? The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) himself has announced - Ya Ali, You and your Shias are successful.

Verse 89

2.Some scholars of tradition and Commentators have made Ibrahim (a.s.) a liar due to the words when he said - I am sick, though it is a great lie. When Allah makes a believer His friend, he cannot lie. The fact is that Ibrahim (a.s.) was in preaching and he refused their gods. Then he looked at the stars and said - I am sick. I am in the stage of consideration and worries as a common man that I can make people alert towards their ignorance and destroy their idols.

Verse 96

3.The stones also have been created by Allah of which you have made your gods and Allah has not done this work and prepared these images.

Verse 103

4.There is a dispute among the writers whether Ismail (a.s.) was sacrificial or Ishaq. According to Jews he was Ishaq (a.s.) whereas Quran mentions only Ismail (a.s.). He was the first son of Ibrahim (a.s.). Taurat the holy book of Jews also mentions tbe same. Ibrahim (a.s.) was 86 years old when Ismail was born and when Ishaq (a.s.) was born, he was 100 years old. Secondly the mentton concerning the good news of Ishaq (a.s.) is made after Ismail (a.s.). That means Ismail (a.s.) was the sacrificial one. Then a point in that if Ishaq (a.s.) would be a victim his memorial would be in Syria because his mother Sarah’s residence was in Syria and Ismail and his mother Hajra (a.s.) were in Mecca. This is the best tradition and had clarified that Ismail (a.s.) was the chosen one and not Ishaq (a.s.). Here to understand about the great sacrifice, this point is worth consideration that Allah ransomed him with a great sacrifice and delivered Ismail (a.s.) from trials and tribulations. To become a great sacrificial, needs sacrifice that passes from both the stages and can obtain a great honor.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

There is chance of Toriya (double meaning) in the 89th ayat And its use is permitted at a time when there is scope of an apparent meaning and there is no mischief (Fasad) in Toriya. And the occasion should not be that of propagation of religion or the explanation of religious law. Benefit : Indeed the inclusion of Ishaq (a.s.) in the righteous is a matter of great honour. But Ismail (a.s.) is compared to the ‘great slave’ which is the greatest honour. Because the Lord of the worlds has not referred to anyone else after him as Aleem (Knowledgeable) except Ibrahim and Ismail (a.s.) and has indeed expressed the perfection of knowledge in these two and they did not in any way fall short in complying with divine commands while the divine order was conveyed to them through a dream and it was not an obvious revelation.

  2. 1

It was the perfection of the faith of Ibrahim and Ismail (a.s.) that the father considered the dream as the command of Allah and the son also invited him to act on it and said there was no need to ponder on divine commands and that he would find him patient If only the Muslim of this age had been aware of this meaning of Islam and following the religion of Ibrahim they had submitted upon every order.

  3. 2

The commentators and traditionalists have given various interpretations to this. One of this is that it was a Ram that had grazed in Paradise for forty years. Thus what doubt can be regarding its importance? But in the traditions of Infallibles it implies the martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.) the greatest sacrifice of humanity.

  4. Benefit

It is said that Baal was 20 hands long idol which had four faces and 400 servants. It was situated on the border of Shaam at the place called Babek.
