Makkan182 verses

37:30We had no authority over you. No, you [yourselves] were a rebellious lot.

37:31So our Lord’s word became due against us that we shall indeed taste [the punishment].

37:32So we perverted you, for we were perverse [ourselves].’

37:33So, that day they will share the punishment.

37:34Indeed, that is how We deal with the guilty.

37:35Indeed, it was they who, when they were told, ‘There is no god except Allah,’ used to be disdainful,

37:36and [they would] say, ‘Shall we abandon our gods for a crazy poet?’1

37:37Indeed, he has brought [them] the truth, and confirmed the [earlier] apostles.

37:38Indeed you will taste the painful punishment,

37:39and you will be requited only for what you used to do

37:40—[all] except Allah’s exclusive servants.

37:41For such there is a known provision

37:42—fruits—and they will be held in honour,

37:43in the gardens of bliss,

37:44[reclining] on couches, facing one another,

37:45served around with a cup, from a clear fountain,

37:46snow-white, delicious to the drinkers,

37:47wherein there will be neither headache nor will it cause them stupefaction,*

37:48and with them will be maidens, of restrained glances with big [beautiful] eyes,

37:49as if they were hidden ostrich eggs.

37:50Some of them will turn to others, questioning each other.

37:51One of them will say, ‘Indeed I had a companion

37:52who used to say, ‘‘Are you really among those who affirm

37:53that when we have died and become dust and bones, we shall be brought to retribution?’’ ’2

37:54He will say, ‘Will you have a look?’

37:55Then he will take a look and sight him in the middle of hell.

37:56He will say, ‘By Allah, you had almost ruined me!

Commentary on this passage

Verse 41

1.The mention of the worship of the sincere ones among the sinners is by way of exception and the bounties that are there for them are incomparable and matchless. They are as under: (i) They will be given fresh fruits. (ii) They will be highly honoured. (iii) They will live in the garden of pleasure.(iv) They all will be seated on thrones facing each other. They will not feel loneliness. (v) There will be delicious pure water for drinking. (vi) Their drink shall be white and delicious. (vii) There will be no effect of unconsciousness or madness in their drink. (viii) There will be black-eyed heavenly nymphs around them whose eyes are only for their husbands and not for others. (ix) Their eyes will be aware and taking in the sights. (x) The color of their cheeks will be like roses, as if they were eggs carefully protected. Be it known that, if there will be heavenly nymphs like concealed eggs for men then there will be lovely young male servants of Paradise like scattered beads for women. Men or women nobody will be disappointed from heavenly bounties

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

How mad were these people who called the Prophet (s.a.) insane, that they used to make two allegations at one and the same time and they did not even understand that there is contradiction in the two. The poet uses his brain and thinks on various lines while the reasoning capacity of a mad man is useless.

  2. Benefit

In the 47th ayat ‘Nazar is used for drawing out water or serving wine which destroys the intellect. That is the wine of the world. The wine of the hereafter is not so.

  3. Benefit

These ayats indicated that there will be communication between Heaven and Hell, although there is a mention of a curtain between the two and there is a distance between the two also which is indicated by the word ‘Nida’. But even after this it is possible that the inmates of Paradise may be given a vision that they can see the inmates of Hell and speak to them too. Regarding the 50th ayat etc. it is said that this is the happy conversation of the inmates of Paradise.

  4. 2

‘Madeen’ is the one who is recompensed. ‘Matla’ is the one who peeps, ‘Sawaaul Jaheem’ - Centre of Hell. ‘Inqadat’ In has become shortened the original was Innaka. ‘Tardeen’ - to kill.
