Makkan182 verses

37:161Indeed you and what you worship1

37:162cannot mislead [anyone] about Him,

37:163except someone who is bound for hell.

37:164‘There is none among us but has a known place.

37:165It is we who are the ranged ones.

37:166It is we who celebrate Allah’s glory.’

37:167They indeed, used to say,

37:168‘Had we possessed a Reminder from our predecessors,

37:169we would have surely been Allah’s exclusive servants.’

37:170But they disbelieved it [when it came to them]. Soon they will know!

37:171Certainly Our decree has gone beforehand in favour of Our servants, the apostles,

37:172that they will indeed receive [Allah’s] help,*

37:173and indeed Our hosts will be the victors.*

37:174So leave them alone for a while,

37:175and watch them; soon they will see [the truth of the matter]!

37:176Do they seek to hasten Our punishment?

37:177But when it descends in their courtyard it will be a dismal dawn for those who had been warned.2

37:178So leave them alone for a while,

37:179and watch; soon they will see!

37:180Clear is your Lord, the Lord of Might, of whatever they allege [concerning Him].

37:181Peace be to the apostles!

37:182All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 172

1.One must not have doubt that Allah has promised help to His sincere people then why do they sometimes become subdued by the worldly people, and why don’t they overcome and succeed in every war ? Because there are different styles of help and this help is given by the source of strong arguments and sometimes it concerns with steadfastness in that it would not change in severe trouble and conquer the war with patience and sometimes it connects with political strength and power. Every person is waiting for this help. Though the reality is this that help should come into little public view, so that the sincerity and trial of Allah’s believer will come into existence. If all difficulties would be solved by divine help, how would the greatness of believers be estimated ? And how do we know that this help is not on the basis of relationship and on the contrary this help is included on the basis of faith and character.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The 172-173 ayats prove that the Almighty has promised help and victory to those who are on the position of obedience and are included in the army of Allah. Otherwise mere uttering of the name of Allah and not entering the army of Allah is not promised anything.

  2. 1

Apparently it is the statement of those angels who were alleged to have been related to Allah. That we are the servants of Allah and we are not His relatives. And this is the religion of all the servants of Allah, whom ignorant people have tried to prove as god or relatives of God.

  3. 2

May Allah protect us? Indeed in whichever house the punishment descends no one can imagine how its morning will be. It was an ancient custom of Arabs that on meeting someone the first thing they ask is: How was your morning? Now consider how the morning of these oppressors shall be.

  4. Benefit

The last ayats mention the needlessness and purification of Allah, His Lordship and obedience. His salaam on His righteous servants and His complete praise is also mentioned. This is the complete system of human life and a formulated code of law.
