37:134When We delivered him and all his family,
37:135excepting an old woman among those who remained behind,
37:136We destroyed the rest.
37:138and at night. Do you not exercise your reason?
37:140When he absconded toward the laden ship,
37:141he drew lots with them and was the one to be condemned [as one to be thrown overboard].
37:142Then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.
37:143Had he not been one of those who celebrate Allah’s glory,
37:144he would have surely remained in its belly till the day they will be resurrected.
37:145Then We cast him on a bare shore, and he was sick.
37:146So We made a gourd plant grow above him.
37:147We sent him to a [community of] hundred thousand or more,
37:148and they believed [in him]. So We provided for them for a while.
37:149Ask them, are daughters to be for your Lord while sons are to be for them?
37:150Did We create the angels females while they were present?
37:151Be aware that it is out of their mendacity that they say,
37:152‘Allah has begotten [offsprings],’ and they indeed speak a falsehood.
37:153Has He preferred daughters to sons?
37:154What is the matter with you? How do you judge?
37:155Will you not then take admonition?
37:156Do you have a manifest authority?
37:157Then produce your scripture, should you be truthful.
37:158And they have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn, while the jinn certainly know that they will be presented [before Him].3
37:159Clear is Allah of whatever they allege [about Him]
37:160—[all] except Allah’s exclusive servants.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 140
1.Seeing the chastisement on the community, Yunus (a.s.) fled to a ship and mounted it after taking permission. The ship started sinking. The people said. One is guilty from us, cast him off from the boat. For more investigation they drew lots and the name of Yunus (a.s.) came. Yunus (a.s.) himself jumped into the sea and cursed himself and said: I ran away seeing my people involved in chastisement and did not help them. Now there is no one to help me and started glorifying Allah. As a result, he was delivered from this trouble and it was established that no marine power can also harm one who glorifies Allah seeks pardon from Him. O would that instead of flattering the naval powers people had taken support of seeking pardon from Allah! Allah would have surely delivered them from all calamities. Yunus (a.s.) reached a barren land. Allah grew a pumpkin patch for his shelter. This is the sign that the effect of seeking pardon is in the sea and as well as on land. No place is bereft of these effects.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
The Arabs used to travel from Hijaz to Shaam for trade and they used to pass through the area which hid been inhabited by the people of Lut (a.s.) and punishment had descended on him.
- 2
Yunus is the same prophet who is sometimes called Zannoon, and sometimes he is called the master of death. According to some commentators he lived in Nainawa which was the seat of the kingdom of Assyrians and it was situated on the Eastern banks of Tigris. There is Zabar on the ‘noon’ of Nainawa and not zer. Benefit: The honour of the people of Yunus (a.s.) is that their consequences were good because they had repented while the end of all the nations was destruction.

This is the refutation of the view of Bani Kanana and Bani Khazaa. They thought that Allah had married the daughters of Jinns and they had issues from them who are the angels. Therefore the angels are the daughters of Allah born through the Jinns.
