Makkan83 verses

36:53It will be but a single Cry, and, behold, they will all be presented before Us!

36:54‘Today no soul will be wronged in the least, nor will you be requited except for what you used to do.’

36:55Indeed today the inhabitants of paradise rejoice in their engagements1

36:56—they and their mates, reclining on couches in the shades.

36:57There they have fruits, and they have whatever they want.

36:58‘Peace!’—a watchword from the all-merciful Lord.*

36:59And ‘Get apart today, you guilty ones!’

36:60‘Did I not exhort you, O children of Adam, saying, “Do not worship Satan. He is indeed your manifest enemy.*

36:61Worship Me. That is a straight path”?*

36:62Certainly, he has led astray many of your generations. Have you not exercised your reason?

36:63This is the hell you had been promised!

36:64Enter it today, because of what you used to deny.2

36:65Today We shall seal their mouths, and their hands shall speak to Us, and their feet shall bear witness concerning what they used to earn.’3

36:66Had We wished We would have blotted out their eyes: then, were they to advance towards the path, how would have they seen?

36:67And had We wished We would have deformed them in their place; then they would neither have been able to move ahead nor to return.

36:68And whomever We give a long life, We cause him to regress in creation. Then, will they not exercise their reason?*

36:69We did not teach him poetry, nor does it behoove him. This is just a reminder and a manifest Quran,

36:70so that anyone who is alive may be warned, and that the word may come due against the faithless.

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

Verse 61

1.Sirat-e-Mustaqeem is a combination of two limits. Not to worship Shaitan and pray to Allah, the Merciful. Though people who are worshipping both are far away from the right path and they search for heaven in licentiousness. Such people are also excluded who live away from both of them and consider neutrality the safest.

Verse 69

2.We should know that poetry is that which has special weight and rhymes but according to scholars a couplet has imaginary thoughts and baseless meanings and perhaps in that sense the infidels called the Prophet (s.a.) a poet... Otherwise the Holy Quran does not contain any restriction of rhyme or metre.

Allah, the Lord of universe clarified that the foundation of Quran is on the revelation of Allah and it cannot be considered imaginary or baseless.

This is also known that poetry is not prohibited in Islam ifit is meaningful, and if it consists of religious knowledge, is more praiseworthy. Such as Prophet (s.a.) himself encouraged poetical verses about religious sinless persons, the family of the Prophet (s.a.) have rewarded them.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The 58th ayat indicates that Salam is an item of good etiquette that is a present from this world to the Hereafter. This custom will be useful there too.

  2. 1

Fakehoon is derived from Fakahat. It means those who are comfortable and in enjoyment. It is not related to Fakeh. Araaek - It is plural of Areeka. That is throne. Jibbil - creation.

  3. *

. ‘Worship’ in 60th ayat is in the meaning of obedience as mentioned in the traditions that one who obeyed someone in sin, is as if he has worshipped him.

  4. *

The mention of path and way in ayat 61 and many other ayats denotes that life of man is not static in this world. He is a traveller and a traveller must be careful or he shall lose the way.

  5. 2

Islauha - That is burn in this, bear its heat, etc.

  6. 3

This points towards the helplessness of man. He was under the impression that like he had used sweet tongue in this world he would be able to do same in the Hereafter. But there he shall not be permitted to do so. The tongue will also witness against him for the sins that he had committed through it, like, lying, allegation, blame, back biting, abuse etc., as mentioned in the 24th ayat of Surah Nur.

  7. Benefit

The 68th ayat denotes the journey of life. The body and soul travel together for some days. After this the soul goes towards evolution and the body moves towards decline.
