Verses 38–52

36. Yaseen · Yaseen

Makkan83 verses

36:38The sun runs on to its place of rest: That is the ordaining of the All-mighty, the All-knowing.

36:39As for the moon, We have ordained its phases, until it becomes like an old palm leaf.

36:40Neither it behooves the sun to overtake the moon, nor may the night outrun the day, and each swims in an orbit.

36:41A sign for them is that We carried their progeny in the laden ship,*

36:42and We have created for them what is similar to it, which they ride.1

36:43And if We like We drown them, whereat they have no one to call for help, nor are they rescued

36:44except by a mercy from Us and for an enjoyment until some time.

36:45And when they are told, ‘Beware of that which is before you and that which is behind you, so that you may receive [His] mercy…’2

36:46There does not come to them any sign from among the signs of their Lord but that they have been disregarding it.

36:47When they are told, ‘Spend out of what Allah has provided you,’ the faithless say to the faithful, ‘Shall we feed [someone] whom Allah would feed, if He wished? You are only in manifest error.’

36:48And they say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, should you be truthful?’

36:49They do not await but a single Cry that will seize them as they wrangle.*

36:50Then they will not be able to make any will, nor will they return to their folks.

36:51And when the Trumpet is blown, behold, there they will be, scrambling towards their Lord from their graves!

36:52They will say, ‘Woe to us! Who raised us from our place of sleep?’ ‘This is what the All-beneficent had promised, and the apostles had spoken the truth!’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 38

1.The scholars have given fresh explanation of this verse in every era. And as much as the knowledge of astronomy increases the meanings of this Ayat change. The ancient people thought that the sun was moving around a centre. According to the later people running and rotating are two different things. And besides rotating on its axis, the sun is also moving forward at more than 12 miles per second. Except for Allah no one knows where it is going. No doubt the Almighty has made such vast and expansive space that after thousands of years of this race there is no shortage of space. We should know that the present movement of the sun is the sign of Allah’s knowledge and interpreted as His mighty power. It means that on the invocation of anyone if the movement of the natural existence changes he can be called the maker of fate. It is another thing that Allah himself is doing this work with His own strength and His believers are doing this work through prayers and supplications.

Verse 47

2.The behaviour of dishonest people of every era is the same that whenever they are warned, they make fun of it and express the supremacy of their view in this way. They are advised not to create discord. They say as a fact we are the reformers, when it is said: Believe in Allah. They say: We are not going to believe in Allah like foolish people. When it is said: Prostrate to Allah the Merciful, they say: Who is Rahman? Who is he? When it is said: Abstain from evil they say: Your prayers teach you only this, that we leave religion of our forefathers and become like you? When it is said: Be afraid of Allah’s chastisement they say when will this come? We do not see any sign of it and when it is said: Pay the poor rate They say why does not Allah himself give it to them? When Allah is present with them, why are they asking us? It is clear, that people of this mentality are living in every era. May Allah forgive them.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The mention of progeny in the 41st ayat is to awaken emotions and this is because a ship is needed to cross the generation even though great people may cover the journey in some other way. By quoting the example of ships the Almighty intended to invite attention towards how the huge ships remain afloat on water and move with speed, how they battle the storms? All this is not possible without divine mercy. If we ponder upon the different methods of cargo transport we realize that marine transport is the cheapest and the best mode of transport. It is instrumental in transporting millions of tons of cargo and oil to different countries. No other mode of transport can match it.

  2. 1

The past commentators used to think that it denotes camels, horses, donkeys and mules etc. The present day commentators think that its scope is very much vast. All the vehicles like aeroplanes, ships and even rockets can be included in it. All of them are images of divine mercy and power.

  3. 2

“What is in their hands” denotes the things prohibited in religion and “what is behind them” indicates their punishment and consequence. Or the first term refers to the chastisement of the Hereafter.

  4. Benefit

The sketch of the 49th ayat is drawn by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) in the way that Qiyamat will be so swift that the shopkeeper will not be able to complete the transaction, a person who is eating will not be able to put a morsel in his mouth. The person who is making the pond will not be able to water the animals. (May Allah give us refuge).
