36:10It is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them, they will not have faith.
36:11You can only warn someone who follows the Reminder and fears the All-beneficent in secret; so give him the good news of forgiveness and a noble reward.
36:12Indeed it is We who revive the dead and write what they have sent ahead and their effects [which they left behind], and We have figured everything in a manifest Imam.

36:13Cite for them the example of the inhabitants of the town when the apostles came to it.1
36:14When We sent to them two [apostles], they impugned both of them. Then We reinforced them with a third, and they said, ‘We have indeed been sent to you.’
36:15They said, ‘You are no other than human beings like us, and the All-beneficent has not sent down anything, and you are only lying.’*

36:19They said, ‘Your bad omens attend you. What! If you are admonished.... Indeed, you are an unrestrained lot.’

Commentary on this passage
Verse 11
1.There are two basic conditions for guidance. (1) If a man is ready to accept guidance and ability of acceptance is found in his mind. (2) If he has a fear of God in his mind without seeing Him. He should not live in false hope of the word ‘Rahman’ that Allah shall not chastise him. On the contrary he should be frightened of His curse and chastisement with His favour and faith, so that his heart would be soft and traditions of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) can affect on him.
Verse 12
2.According to the traditions Imam-e-Mubeen means chaste religious leaders (a.s.) whom Allah has settled them as His custodians of the branches of knowledge and the center of His Will.
Verse 20
3.According to commentators, he was Habib Najjar. Though it is not mentioned in the past books but this character is worthy of consideration. When he saw that people were ready to kill the prophet he came out for his help and without showing his faith, he started doing his work. First of all, by addressing them as messengers he tried to earn their favour. Then he pointed out towards their high status, that they do not ask for wages after taking so much trouble. And they also seem to be guided. Then he made people attentive towards the actual matter question and though apparently he said that why should I not pray to my Creator? But actually he wanted to make people of the community aware and for this he used the words ‘Ilaihe Turjaoon’ and then till the end he continued to make them attentive towards the favours of Allah. I have brought faith on your God. How can I accept them as gods, if Allah wants to harm they cannot save and neither can they recommend. And when he entered the Garden, his heart cried : O would that if my community had known of this reward and brought faith.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
According to majority of commentators the ‘town’ refers to Antioch and the ‘messengers’ refers to Yohanna and Julius who were sent before and Simon who was sent to assist them.
Benefit
The word Rahman in the 15th ayat proves that in the view of the infidels “the Beneficent” has left His servants free. He does not chain them in His laws. Some people of the present age also think on these lines. That the meaning of Allah being Rahman and Raheem implies that He has given freedom to the people and does not punish them for anything. Actually it is the relic of the ancient infidels that is inherited by some Muslims.

It is a limit of following the doubts that they begin to see misfortune even in existence and propagation of the prophets. And this is the truth that when man is afflicted with this disease he begins to see ill omen in everything. That is why Islam has destroyed superstitions. Imam Sadiq (a.s.) has made a remarkable statement. That the value of ill-omen depends upon the weightage we give to it. If we do not give it any importance it will have no effect on you.
