قُلْ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْمَٰعِيلَ وَإِسْحَٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ وَمَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَٱلنَّبِيُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ مُسْلِمُونَ
3:84Say, ‘We have faith in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and that which Moses, Jesus and the prophets were given by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.’
وَمَن يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمِ دِينًۭا فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ
3:85Should anyone follow a religion other than Islam, it shall never be accepted from him, and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.1
كَيْفَ يَهْدِى ٱللَّهُ قَوْمًۭا كَفَرُوا۟ بَعْدَ إِيمَٰنِهِمْ وَشَهِدُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱلرَّسُولَ حَقٌّۭ وَجَآءَهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
3:86How shall Allah guide a people who have disbelieved after their faith and [after] bearing witness that the Apostle is true, and [after] manifest proofs had come to them? Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.2
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ جَزَآؤُهُمْ أَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ لَعْنَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
3:87Their requital is that there shall be upon them the curse of Allah, the angels, and all mankind.
خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا لَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ
3:88They will remain in it [forever], and their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be granted any respite,
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌ
3:89except such as repent after that and make amends, for Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بَعْدَ إِيمَٰنِهِمْ ثُمَّ ٱزْدَادُوا۟ كُفْرًۭا لَّن تُقْبَلَ تَوْبَتُهُمْ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلضَّآلُّونَ
3:90Indeed those who turn faithless after their faith, and then advance in faithlessness, their repentance will never be accepted, and it is they who are the astray.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ كُفَّارٌۭ فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِم مِّلْءُ ٱلْأَرْضِ ذَهَبًۭا وَلَوِ ٱفْتَدَىٰ بِهِۦٓ ۗ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّٰصِرِينَ
3:91Indeed those who turn faithless and die while they are faithless, a world of gold will not be accepted from any of them should he offer it for ransom. For such there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.3
Tafsir
Commentary on this passage
Verse 85
1.This is the last announcement of the Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.s.) regarding the beliefs of Jews and Christians. He says: We believe in all Prophets and all commands of Allah. We are believers of Allah and we do not differentiate between His commands and His representatives. If you really are a true believer of Allah, you would also not differentiate between His commands and His representatives.
2.Some people construed from Ayat No. 62 (Surah Baqarah) that faith on Allah and resurrection is sufficient, whether he is a Jew or Christian or hypocrite. This auspicious Ayat asserts that no other religion is acceptable, except Islam and faith on Allah or faith on His Apostles are not separate from each other.
Verse 90
3.The previous verse of the Holy Quran mentions acceptance of forgiveness and this verse states non-acceptance. And in the later ayat there is mention that there shall be no sort of concession. This shows that there are three kinds of infidels: (i) Those who repent after disbelief - their repentance will be accepted. (ii) Those who continue to disbelieve and their repentance is not sincere. As many believers do: Such as shaving beard and slapping their cheeks - such repentance cannot be accepted. (iii) Those who never repent and die on infidelity, their ransom will also not be accepted, therefore repentance is of no use.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

This signifies that salvation is wholly based on Islam. Those who die on other faiths will be in loss in the Hereafter even though they make great profits in this life.

The unjust people are those who do not want to derive benefits from the ayaat and bayyinat (signs and portents) so Allah also does not force them.

Allah’s curse is His punishment and dissatisfaction. The curse of Angels and human beings is their prayer to invoke curse on them, just as the Salawaat (blessing) of Allah is His Mercy and the Salawaat of the creatures is supplication for Mercy. 4. This gold is just an example that even the greatest penalty will not be accepted. Otherwise where shall gold be available in the plains of gathering (Hashr) that infidels could use it for paying a fine There are two types of people who deviate from the right path and become renegades. Sometimes he is a Muslim by birth but later he becomes an apostate and sometimes he embraces Islam and then backs out. The punishment for the latter is less but as for the former the punishment is death even though from the aspect of the Hereafter he repents and is forgiven by Allah. But it is a preventive measure to avoid large scale treason in the Islamic community.
