3:78There is a group of them who alter their voice while reading out a text [that they have themselves authored], so that you may suppose it to be from the Book, though it is not from the Book, and they say, ‘It is from Allah,’ though it is not from Allah, and they attribute lies to Allah, and they know [it].1

3:79It does not behoove any human that Allah should give him the Book, judgement and prophethood, and then he should say to the people, ‘Be my servants instead of Allah.’ Rather [he would say], ‘Be a godly people, because of your teaching the Book and because of your studying it.’2

3:80And he would not command you to take the angels and the prophets for lords. Would he call you to unfaith after you have submitted [to Allah]?

3:81When Allah took a compact concerning the prophets, [He said,] ‘Inasmuch as I have given you [the knowledge] of the Book and wisdom, should an apostle come to you thereafter confirming what is with you, you shall believe in him and help him.’ He said, ‘Do you pledge and accept My covenant on this condition?’ They said, ‘We pledge.’ He said, ‘Then be witnesses, and I, too, am among the witnesses along with you.’

3:82Then whoever turns away after that—it is they who are the transgressors.

3:83Do they seek a religion other than that of Allah, while to Him submits whoever there is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him they will be brought back?3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 78

1.When Jews did not succeed in feigning to believe in God in the morning and disbelieving in the evening, they conceptualized a new plan as they realized that the followers are lovers of the Holy Book. They thought of tampering the recitation of Quran and desired to alter the meanings intended by Allah, or they devised the preparation of a new book as the Holy book to achieve their aim. The hypocrites follow the same today with Islam as they were acting before. They alleged that the Prophets were claimants of Divinity. Though, this is an unreasonable idea that Allah’s apostle can raise his voice against Allah. This is never possible.

Verse 81

2.This is a reminder to draw the attention of the Jews to the point that all previous Apostles had made a covenant to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and informed their followers of it, none has a right to refute it, else he would be included among transgressors.

Verse 83

3.The Holy Prophet’s (s.a.w.s.) Messengership and Prophethood is the actual religion of Allah and this denial construes innovation of a new religion and this search cannot succeed. The whole universe prostrates before Allah and Allah has made the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) as the Prophet to the entire universe. Can we then bring another god who can take away this station and transfer it to another? The Holy Quran has given the sign of Allah’s representatives that He is not selfish, rather he is obedient to Allah and due to this reason the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) prevented his followers from prostrating to him and Ali (a.s.) killed one of the Nusaris and set fire to his corpse because he (a.s.) believed that tolerating the ascription of ones divinity is against the dignity of a divine representative and is its negation.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Twisting the tongues has two meanings : (i) They change the words or meaning of the present Taurat. (ii) They make additions from their own side and say that it is a Book of Allah while it is not.

  2. 2

Rabaneen is the plural of Rabani, Rabani denotes a holy person. It is mostly used for a person who himself reads a divine book and also teaches it to others. An ignorant person or one who does no good act cannot be called a divine scholar. Islam does not demand educational achievements it demands service to religion.

  3. 3

Everyone should confess to the principles of faith. whether for the well-being of this world or in fear of the punishment of the Hereafter. Or it may be indicating that even those who have got a free will are ultimately subservient to the will of Allah.

  4. Benefit

We should know that Tanan relates to the Islamic law and Karhan indicates compulsion. Or may be Tanan is the Islam of believers and Karhan is the Islam of the hypocrites.
