3. Aal-i-Imraan · The Family of Imraan
Madinan200 verses
لَن تَنَالُوا۟ ٱلْبِرَّ حَتَّىٰ تُنفِقُوا۟ مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا۟ مِن شَىْءٍۢ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِهِۦ عَلِيمٌۭ
3:92You will never attain piety until you spend out of what you hold dear, and whatever you may spend of anything, Allah indeed knows it.1
۞ كُلُّ ٱلطَّعَامِ كَانَ حِلًّۭا لِّبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ إِلَّا مَا حَرَّمَ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ مِن قَبْلِ أَن تُنَزَّلَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةُ ۗ قُلْ فَأْتُوا۟ بِٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ فَٱتْلُوهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ
3:93All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel had forbidden himself before the Torah was sent down. Say, ‘Bring the Torah, and read it, if you are truthful.’2
فَمَنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْكَذِبَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
3:94So whoever fabricates a lie against Allah after that—it is they who are the wrongdoers.
قُلْ صَدَقَ ٱللَّهُ ۗ فَٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ حَنِيفًۭا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
3:95Say, ‘Allah has spoken the truth; so follow the creed of Abraham, a Hanif, and he was not one of the polytheists.
إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍۢ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِى بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًۭا وَهُدًۭى لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ
3:96Indeed the first house to be set up for mankind is the one at Bakkah, blessed and a guidance for all nations.3
فِيهِ ءَايَٰتٌۢ بَيِّنَٰتٌۭ مَّقَامُ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ۖ وَمَن دَخَلَهُۥ كَانَ ءَامِنًۭا ۗ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلْبَيْتِ مَنِ ٱسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًۭا ۚ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
3:97In it are manifest signs [and] Abraham’s Station, and whoever enters it shall be secure. And it is the duty of mankind toward Allah to make pilgrimage to the House—for those who can afford the journey to it—and should anyone renege [on his obligation], Allah is indeed without need of the creatures.4
قُلْ يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ شَهِيدٌ عَلَىٰ مَا تَعْمَلُونَ
3:98Say, ‘O People of the Book! Why do you deny the signs of Allah, while Allah is witness to what you do?’
قُلْ يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لِمَ تَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ تَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًۭا وَأَنتُمْ شُهَدَآءُ ۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
3:99Say, ‘O People of the Book! why do you bar the faithful from the way of Allah, seeking to make it crooked, while you are witnesses [to its truthfulness]? And Allah is not oblivious of what you do.’
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن تُطِيعُوا۟ فَرِيقًۭا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ يَرُدُّوكُم بَعْدَ إِيمَٰنِكُمْ كَٰفِرِينَ
3:100O you who have faith, if you obey a part of those who were given the Book, they will turn you back, after your faith, into faithless ones.5
Tafsir
Commentary on this passage
Verse 92
1.This auspicious verse challenges openly that religion of Allah is the religion of sacrifices and without the sacrifice of beloved possessions one cannot obtain goodness. According to some traditions, after the invention of money, Shaitan became happy and celebrated that his troubles were over as people would now mislead themselves. Not spending money in the way of Allah is proof that one is not the slave of Allah; rather he is the slave of wealth and for this it is not necessary that you keep the wealth before you and prostrate to it.
Verse 93
2.When the Prophet (s.a.) announced that he following the religion of Ibrahim (a.s.) and decreed the flesh of camel lawful and ordered to pray facing the Holy Ka’ba, the Jews raised a hue and cry that both these things are unlawful for the followers of Ibrahim (a.s.). The Prophet (s.a.) said: Read your Taurat, it mentions that camel meat is lawful. Before the Taurat, Yaqoob (a.s.) abstained from it but it was not due to a prohibitionary command. You have accepted the custom and forgotten the principle. Ka’ba is more exalted than Baitul Muqaddas. Baitul Muqaddas was constructed by Sulaiman (a.s.) and Ka’ba still has the Maqam-e-lbrahim (a.s.). This is an announcement that Ka’ba was constructed by Ibrahim (a.s.). Therefore it behoves the followers of Ibrahim (a.s.) that they consider camel meat lawful and pray facing Ka’ba. Taking exception to it is indeed great foolishness.
Verse 99
3.In the first ayat the People of the Book have been refrained from misguidance. And in this ayat they have been told not to mislead others. The next ayat has refrained the believers from being misled; as Jews and Christians will always try to mislead. “But it is your duty to be alert and avoid the wrong path”,

The religion oflbrahim is the name gi yen to the basic beliefs and principles that have remained unchanged through every age. It is not related to the law of Shariat that changed with every period.

Bakka - is the name of Mecca. Due to the presence of large crowed people jostle they pass from before anyone without any problem.

The capability of the way has three parts. One should have the necessary funds, should be fit enough to undertake the journey and the passage itself should be clear.

This verse compares the people who do not go for Hajj to the infidels and thus proving the importance of this worship act. Benefit: It must to clarified that being the first house of Allah the Kaaba has superiority over holy sanctuaries exceeding other people. ‘For the people’ indicates that all the things bestowed by Allah are for the benefit of mankind. (a) The phrase Alan Naas means that it is a universal responsibility and even the infidels are obliged to perform Hajj like Muslims. (b) In Ayats 97-98 Allah does not address the Ahle Kitab directly he used the word ‘say’ while Ayat no 100 He address the believers directly.
