Commentary on this passage

Verse 29

1.All weaknesses were present in the community of Lut (a.s.) which are seen in the society of present era. Today there are different countries and states in the world where Homosexuality has become legal. Dacoity and robbery in travel becomes a fashion. Dance and music, vain talk and foolishness, to make fun each other, to harm one another becomes common. In another states, all this homosexuality and other perversions are effected in gathering. May Allah send His curse on them.

Verse 35

2.After destroying the community of Lut (a.s.) and after sending the chastisement, Allah left the marks of the ruined houses so that the other people take lesson from it and see the result of unjust people and how communities are ruined and that it does not take much time. The whole town is ruined in one earthquake and no trace of the community was left behind. But woe, that these foolish people cannot take benefit from it. This is the warning for the wise. It is amazing that presently, those who do not take a lesson from this incident and consider this action civilized are called intelligent but actually this is the sign of foolishness of Muslims. May Allah deliver these people from their sleep of ignorance.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

It should remain clear that the mention of Ibrahim (a.s.) about the presence of Lut (a.s.) was that probably due to the barkat of the prophet the chastisement will be condoned and people may come to the right path. Also the deviation of the wife of Lut (a.s.) was due to the bad atmosphere and probably she was all right at the time of her marriage to Lut (a.s.). According to Ruhul Bayan the city that was subjected to divine chastisement, Sodom had a population of around seven hundred thousand people.

  2. 1

The ayat has made clear that companionship of a prophet or living in his vicinity or being his wife does not save one from chastisement. The people of Lut, the fellow townsmen and his wife, all of them perished because their character itself was not good. The presence of a prophet is beneficial for the people only if they have faith in him. Otherwise his presence itself becomes a conclusive argument (Itmam -e-Hujiat) and a means for the descent of divine punishment.

  3. 2

Lut (a.s.) had to face two types of difficulties. One that his people were so evil that they would not even leave his guests alone and also the guests were so handsome. Secondly, they had brought the news of ensuring punishment and a prophet is definitely worried by such nows. In spite of the disobedience and evil of the people there is mercy in the heart of a prophet that no one can remove.
