26:65and We delivered Moses and all those who were with him.

26:66Then We drowned the rest.1

26:67There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them do not have faith.

26:68Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.2

26:69Relate to them the account of Abraham

26:70when he said to his father and his people, ‘What is it that you are worshiping?!’

26:71They said, ‘We worship idols, and are constant in our devotion to them.’

26:72He said, ‘Do they hear you when you call them?

26:73Or do they bring you any benefit, or cause you any harm?’

26:74They said, ‘Indeed, we found our fathers doing likewise.’

26:75He said, ‘Have you regarded what you have been worshipping,3

26:76you and your ancestors?

26:77They are indeed enemies to me, but the Lord of all the worlds,

26:78who created me, it is He who guides me,

26:79and provides me with food and drink,

26:80and when I get sick, it is He who cures me;

26:81who will make me die, then He will bring me to life,

26:82and who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Retribution.’

26:83‘My Lord! Grant me [unerring] judgement, and unite me with the Righteous.

26:84Confer on me a worthy repute among the posterity,4

26:85and make me one of the heirs to the paradise of bliss.

26:86Forgive my father, for he is one of those who are astray.

26:87Do not disgrace me on the day that they will be resurrected,

26:88the day when neither wealth nor children will avail,

26:89except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart,’5

26:90and paradise will be brought near for the Godwary,

Commentary on this passage

Verse 74

1.We guess from these incidents that the world is still the same from where it had stated and was in the period of Ibrahim (a.s.). On the contrary still thousands of people are present today who do not provide proof of statements of their laws and customs. Except that: We are doing whatever our ancestors were doing. These foolish people have no common sense. Can they not perceive that they have to depend only on Allah and on His chaste servants. What is the use of depending on fathers and forefathers? This is a good manner and morality that creatures, guidance. life, death, eating, drinking, and all dealings attributed towards Allah and when one suffers from disease, it is not imputed to Allah and he confesses He curses me so I become ill. As disease is the weakness of human being and to cure him is His kindness.

Verse 85

2.The Holy Prophet’s (s.a.w.s.) supplication indicates towards that I am not the heir to the heaven and nor going to be one. Only my intention is that I should be included along with its heirs and perhaps my future state would be good.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

This was also providence that Firon came near to Moosa (a.s.) so that he and his army would enter the water and be drowned.

  2. 2

This ayat mentions the destruction of the followers of Firon and also states the escape of the followers of Moosa (a.s.). That is why Allah has called Himself Powerful and Merciful. He is dominant over one group and favourable towards another one.

  3. 3

This is a disjoint expection otherwise what does the Almighty have to do with the idols? Benefit: First Ibrahim (a.s.) mentions the creative power of Allah. Then about His Lordship. First guidance, then sustenance, then the cure of diseases. Subsequently life and death and forgiveness in the end. However, the mention of mistake is not in the sense of a sin. Rather it is the realization of ones shortcoming which is a sign of the perfection of servitude.

  4. Benefit

Ibrahim (a.s.) supplicated to Allah for six things : (i) He prayed for wisdom which is the zenith of perception. (ii) He prayed that he is included among the righteous which is the perfection of practical wisdom. (iii) He asked for truthful tongue which perpetuates good remembrance. (iv) He prayed for Paradise which is the proof of his exalted thoughts. (v) He prayed for the forgiveness of his Uncle as he had promised he would. (vi) He prayed for protection against the degradation of Qiyamat which is the zenith of the way of thinking of the believers.

  5. 4

‘The truthful tongue’ denotes good remembrance. A truthful tongue utters nothing but good. And when it is Ibrahim (a.s.) who such a sincere slave of Allah, what else can he utter except truth and goodness? But if the tongue is lying it will not hesitate to allege falsehood on Ibrahim (a.s.) as some concocted traditions do.

  6. 5

Qalbe Saleem is a conscience purified from every defect and perfect in every sense.
