Makkan227 verses
26:216But if they disobey you, say, ‘I am absolved of what you do.’
26:217And put your trust in the All-mighty, the All-merciful,
26:218who sees you when you stand [for prayer],
26:220Indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.
26:221Should I inform you on whom the devils descend?
26:222They descend on every sinful liar.
26:223They eavesdrop, and most of them are liars.
26:224As for the poets, [only] the perverse follow them.
26:225Have you not regarded that they rove in every valley,
26:226and that they say what they do not do?
26:227Barring those who have faith, do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much often, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. And the wrongdoers will soon know at what goal they will end up.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 224
1.The infidels and polytheists have created various doubts to discredit the Quran. The first was that it is a revelation of Satan. In reply to this the Almighty said that is the revelation of the Beneficent. The satans cannot even reach it and they are absolutely incapable of it. The second doubt created by them was that it is some kind of poetry which has enchanted the common people. Allah has differentiated the poets from the prophets. The Poets verify anything but the prophets only speak of the realities. The Poets do not practice what they preach while the Prophets first practice it. However this ayat does not blame the poets of religious poetry because their inspiration is Quranic verses and they are like warriors.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
The apparent meaning of this is that they bow and arise in the congregation prayer with other people. Another subtle meaning is that they tum sides among those who prostrate. And in the same way it is an indication to the purification of the self and character of the ancestors.
Benefit
The use of exception with the poets shows that Islam is not opposed to literary tastes. Islam has always encouraged this provided its foundation lies on belief, good deeds, remembrance of Allah and the help of the downtrodden. It should not be in praise of wine or in admiration of tyrannical rulers. All this degrades the literary value of poetry. We seek the refuge of Allah!
