Makkan227 verses

26:190There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.

26:191Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.

26:192This is indeed [a Book] sent down by the Lord of all the worlds,

26:193brought down by the Trustworthy Spirit

26:194upon your heart (so that you may be one of the warners),

26:195in a clear Arabic language.

26:196It is indeed [foretold] in the scriptures of the ancients.

26:197Is it not a sign for them that the learned of the Children of Israel recognize it?

26:198Had We sent it down upon some non-Arab1

26:199and had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.

26:200This is how We let it pass through the hearts of the guilty:

26:201they do not believe in it until they sight the painful punishment.

26:202It will overtake them suddenly while they are unaware.

26:203Thereupon they will say, ‘Shall we be granted any respite?’

26:204So do they seek to hasten on Our punishment?

26:205Tell me, should We let them enjoy for some years,

26:206then there comes to them what they have been promised,

26:207of what avail to them will be that which they were given to enjoy?

26:208We have not destroyed any town without its having warners,2

26:209for the sake of admonition, and We were not unjust.*

26:210It has not been brought down by the devils.

26:211Neither does it behoove them, nor are they capable [of doing that].

26:212Indeed, they are kept at bay [even] from hearing it.

26:213So do not invoke any god besides Allah, lest you should be among the punished.

26:214Warn the nearest of your kinsfolk,

26:215and lower your wing to the faithful who follow you.3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 193

1.After the account of the past communities, the account of the community of Prophet of Islam, Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) has commenced and in introduction, has mentioned about your Prophethood and your book that this book has descended with the faithful spirit (Jibreel) and there is no possibility of breach of trust of any kind in it and this is present in the Holy Books of ancient time. And the scholars of Jews and Christians know about it, that he was informing before Annunciation that an Apostle is going to come and a Book will also be revealed. But in spite of all these, when Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) came and presented that Book before them, they refused to accept it like past people and their refusal found a response in the heart. There is only one remedy for such people that punishment of Allah should descend on them because they will not follow the right path. And we have revealed the Holy Quran in their language so that there would not remain any excuse and understand that the Holy Quran is not the work of creatures. But evil is evil at all times and it is useless to expect of humanity from it.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Ajmeen is the plural of Ajam. That is one who cannot speak Arabic. Ajmeeen is the plural of Aajami and according to Allamah Tabarsi Ajami is the opposite of eloquence, Thus this sentence of the Holy Quran proves that since the Arabs were so proud of their eloquence that they would never have believed in the Quran if it were revealed in any other language.

  2. Benefit

To have unsurpassed love and regard towards ones nation is a positive quality and is also effective in defence etc. But if one considers the worst people of one’s group better than the best people belonging to other group this nothing but bias and it is this which is criticized.

  3. 2

It is against all norms to punish without prior warnings, That is why Allah first sends His messages and only later sends the punishment.

  4. Benefit

There are four possibilities regarding Zikra in the 209th ayat: (1) It is the object of Munzeroon, (2) It is the absolute object of warner (3) It is the condition of the pronouns of Munzeroon (4) It is the predicate of the subject Mahfooz, That this is a reminder and We are never unjust.

  5. 3

The status of the good-doers is such even the Prophet (s.a.) is prepared to bow down his shoulders to them. History has recorded the incidence of the Prophet (s.a.) lifting up the personalities on his shoulders. This is itself is the proof of the perfect obedience these people adhered to.
