Makkan227 verses

26:167They said, ‘Lot, if you do not desist, you will surely be banished.’

26:168He said, ‘Indeed I detest your conduct.’

26:169‘My Lord! Deliver me and my family from what they do.’

26:170So We delivered him and all his family,

26:171except an old woman who remained behind.

26:172Then We destroyed [all] the rest,

26:173and rained down upon them a rain [of stones]. Evil was the rain of those who were warned!

26:174There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.

26:175Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.

26:176The inhabitants of Aykah impugned the apostles,1

26:177when Shu‘ayb said to them, ‘Will you not be wary [of Allah]?

26:178Indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.

26:179So be wary of Allah and obey me.

26:180I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.

26:181Observe the full measure, and do not be of those who give short measure.

26:182Weigh with an even balance,

26:183and do not cheat the people of their goods. Do not act wickedly on the earth, causing corruption.

26:184Be wary of Him who created you and the earlier generations.’

26:185They said, ‘Indeed you are one of the bewitched.

26:186You are just a human being like us, and we indeed consider you to be a liar.

26:187Make a fragment of the sky falls upon us, should you be truthful.’2

26:188He said, ‘My Lord knows best what you are doing.’

26:189So they impugned him, and then they were overtaken by the punishment of the day of the overshadowing cloud. It was indeed the punishment of a terrible day.3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 176

1.Ashaabul Aika, the dwellers of the forest was a prosperous community near Madayan. They had no connection with people or Madayn that is why Shu’ayb (a.s.) was not called their brother, while all the other Apostles were called brothers of their community due to belonging to the same place and nationality otherwise the Apostles have no relationship with such community who are involved in various kinds of slandering and interpret the invitation of Allah as magic and threaten to stone the representatives of Allah to death.

Verse 181

2.This matter is clarified by the biography of preceding Apostles that each community of every era had a fault. Some were fond of pleasures and oppressed people and some were involved in homosexual relationship and while others were not honest enough to give a full measure and weigh with a right balance and some were involved in the disease of discrimination of class and every Prophet had to face this trouble in some manner. Surprisingly. all these evils have collected together in our present time and the world has become the place of crimes and Allah knows what will happen to the world.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Aika - Bush or Jungle. Makhsir - One who short weighs in selling.

  2. Benefit

Prophet Shu’ayb has mentioned five points that are applicable to every age. (1) Honesty in weighing and measuring (trade). (2) We should not cause any type of harm to the people. (3) The balance should be accurate. (4) We should not point out defects in people or in the property of the people. (5) We should not spread corruption in the land. Benefit: Jablat is the community which is like a mountain in its size and number. That is why some people have stated its number to be 10000. Nature is also called Jablat from this aspect because its demands are like mountains.

  3. 2

The infidels are always committing this foolishness and stupidity that in spite of calling the divinely appointed personalities liar they never prayed for divine chastisement to befall them. Rather they always invited punishment for themselves which is itself a sort of chastisement. Their senses have always acted in the wrong direction.

  4. 3

Regarding ‘Yaum uz Zalla’ (Day of the Shadow) the commentators report that this nation saw that a cloud was shadowing them. They were happy but suddenly fire began to rain from the cloud and they all perished in it.
